Frankly, I'm in disbelief that anyone would go from the conceptual stage to actually cutting up a van before realizing the concept was fundamentally flawed. The rocker panel and floor plate transition area of a Vanagon is a structural part of the body shell. You can't just trim away this whole area and replace it with non-load bearing filler panels. Also, the custom semi-trailing arms don't have any triangulating braces or angles to provide strength.
I'm all for "to each their own," and "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," but at the same time I wish the creator of this project had wielded his handy work on a 4x4 Toyota Van or AWD Astro van instead.
At least the Syncro drivetrain will live on in one of Stephan's Vanagon creations.

Yep I have 3 of those in the shop. It would be cool to put them in the back of the single cab. _________________ 81' Single Cab Syncro 1.8T GMW

Yes. That was Mark's project. We will probably cut the roof off for the sunroof portion. Works perfect. Were looking into building something pretty sweet with all the goodies carefully taken from this Syncro project that never left the rack.. It was pretty much a rusted Vanagon like so many. It's at a good home now and will help us create something special. Complete body wiring harness is now out. Pretty much just a shell. 1500.
The locker tranny has been in the Synfalia for several months now for testing. Has been handling the extra horses nicely.
The "spare" engine is happy to be in the Dream Syncro now. Do love the spare engine seat rail though. Brilliant, if I do say so myself.. More on the Dream Syncro here if interested.
