I am about to buy some used sway a way axles, the guy has two pairs, I only need one pair, and was thinking about getting extras. Do I really need them? Or should I go with just one pair. The axles are being sold on this site too. I am only running a stock 1600... I doubt I will break one... Any input helps..

Blow out a CV with a stock 1600, possibly.

Yes I broke and IRS axle in off road race car.
Have seen many over the years break in off road racing.
In a play car not that much of a chance unless they get nicks in them and are not taken care of.
Remember they made of torsion material and should be installed so they rotate the way they were installed new.
They twist and if installed backwards they will break.

I guess if you break them in racing you own both halves and they would sell you a new one.
Found it was always best to replace in pairs.
This was before having my own magnaflux setup.

We bought a sand rail with every tooth in 2nd gone. A couple on 1st, 3rd, 4th, and reverse was toast. The passenger side axle was shattered too. I cant imagine how much power he had behind that thing.

Ive broken a swing-axle shaft before, with a 1600dp. Of course, I had 31X10.50s and I dropped the clutch (like an idiot) on asphalt, and POW! presto-magico, a snapped axle. When I jacked the car up to see what was wrong I was able to pull the whole wheel and drum still attached to the broken shaft.

So, yes, its possible, but pretty unlikely, as Im just one of those kind of folks who can break an anvil.

has the seller marked the direction of rotaion of prior use?
you might break an axle if you reverse the direction..

I have twisted a few spades off on stock axles and shattered CV's, but never broke a IRS stock axle.

I run SAW axles in my drag rail, hit it at 8000 rpm launch and carry the front wheels about 70 feet, but never broke a SAW axle.

I've never broke an axle, and I'm running custom length axles in mine. I did however grenade a CV joint (or 2 or 3), and I should have took the entire axle/CV assembly out before I got towed off the dunes. Because when I got back to the pits and disassembled it, I found that the grenaded parts had tumbled around inside the boot while I was being towed in and had boogered up a few splines on the axle. Confused Took a while to get the splines straightened out. I need to get another set....just for backups. Live and learn I guess.

With a 1600 the direction of the axle wont even matter. I have thrown no telling how many axles on sandrails and never had any trouble, even some that ran slicks on the drag strip occasionally with a less than 120HP engine.
I occasionally break a VW axle with my 200HP VW and 16.50 comp cut paddles, maybe 1 every 2 years. Never had any trouble with a 150 HP engine.
