PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2011 3:27 pm    Post subject: CV Clearancing Swing Pan for IRS Conversion Reply with quote

Hey guys. I'm not an offroader but I knew you guys would know the answer. I've upgraded my swing axle pan to IRS by welding in the pivots with a jig. I don't have an IRS transaxle yet. I'm at the point in my project where I'm going to go and get the pan sandblasted and powdercoated. I've read that you have to clearance the swing axle frame horns to accept the CV joints off the irs transaxle. Without a transmission to bolt up can someone tell me where (measurements to the center point) and how deep I need to clear for some 100mm Bus CV's?

I do have my old swing axle transmission, can I use that to know where the axles will come out? I also bought some 4.25 ID steel tubing to cut a piece out and weld into the framehorn. Any help would be much appreciated! Also I think this will be a good post once some answers come along, since there isn't any info on the samba that I can find.

I'm pretty sure you do if you have a swing axle pan with a bug IRS transaxle in it.

Hmmm... I haven't heard that... In Hot VW's they did an article on Swing to IRS Conversion (I don't have it with me at the moment) and in the first part they talked about welding in the pivots. Last month I believe, they said that they also need to clearance the frame horns for the CV's. I also found this article http://www.bajaclub.co.uk/PDF_Documents/IRS.PDF that explains the same thing on page 5.

Here's a type1 tranny with bus CV's (pulled from a thread on Kustom Coach Works).

Here's a pic of a stock '74 IRS tranny and CVs on a '68 swing pan. As best as I recall, I clearanced mine in the same spot as where the swing axles rode. I described my swap in some detail here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4446894&highlight=#4446894

Here's the clearance I built into mine:

Great post! Thanks for the info. I'm hoping I can just put my SA tranny up and mark the center of where the axle comes out and use that... So I noticed in your thread on your swap that you changed the front mount... Is that something I'm going to need to do on mine? It's 63' pan...

I just looked at the article you're right. It's for Bug CV's which are smaller in diameter just a bit. So I'm sure if I go just a little deeper it'll be good. But the problem is knowing where exactly to clearance without an IRS tranny for reference.
