Just found this on Ebay under $50.00 , also has turn signals. Fit's in my 2" hitch just plugs into trailer plug. Also with my tire on back gives the back of van more protection. And I can use it to get to my top rack. Don't you just love LED's all rear bulbs are LED. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BULLY-2-INCH-HITCH-STEP-RE...231daf2259 They took my best offer. And free shipping. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . I came across those lights when I was looking for a light for my bike rack (bikes block the tail lights), but could find no info anywhere on how they were wired, so I went with something else. Now that I know it's a flat-four... it's on my list! Thanks for posting about it. _________________ ~Kamz

here is the answer to my email re the OP's link.
"The brake light stripes are approximately a quarter inch wide and come in a7 inch and a 9 7/8 inch lengths. They are in a "D" shaped tube that is abouta quarter inch tall. Shipping to Ontario will be between $10 and $20. Let meknow if you need any additional information. Solomon HarrisCutting Edge Illusions1210 Interior St Suite 2Eugene, OR [email protected]usions.com"
I think that there are many more exconomical options than this expensive unit as so many have mentionned.
I'd like to have the red 3rd brake lite butted on each end with orange signal flashers, all comprised of LED. Going to look around, get some ideas. It will have to be thin because I do not have the open shelf uptop at back but I should be able to fix it right at the top of the top cupboard.
I would like to do it as an increased visibility issue = safety. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

X2 on this setup. It 's what I have, it mounts fine inside my Westy, and it can be seen easily thru 20% window tint.

In addition to the third brake light, I added a forth brake light. When my trailer hitch
is not being used for my hitch haul.
I plug in this lamp that is wired for the trailer hitch harness. It acts as a forth brake
light as well as a parking lamp.
I to copied PDXs' third brake light from JC Whitney, it works good as it should.
After having it installed for a few months, I found the exact same led strip at a
local business for around $15. You may want to check out some of your local truck
businesses first. Maybe you'll get lucky and get a deal? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

How would that bolt up?
I think that would bolt up to the westy shelf but would not work on a GL unless on the outside. When i did mine i looked at the truck light but desided against it because of the low location. Even at the bottom of the window was to low for me.
I used a volvo s70 or s80 led. bright and looks good when off because its clear. Volvo did make one for there wagons that should fit with less cutting.
I would say the 3rd light should be the FIRST upgrade right behind the fuel lines

Thanks-- I hadn't noticed the comments about the turn signals when I read that thread this morning, nor the other link that went right to the one you bought.

yeah I like pdx's too-- the link just leads me to JCWhitney's home page-- haven't found the exact light you guys have yet...
The original light I posted about comes in a clear or smoke cover in which you can get amber turn lights...
I know what you're saying about the red turn lights... I will probably go with just a flat red bar for the third light.

Susie,
Your call, but I personally hate vehicles with flashers somehow integrated in the central braking light. I find that setup way confusing, since my brain associates any bit of red light coming from that area as a braking indication.
Before proceeding, I'd encourage you to read Wikipedia on this topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_lighting#Centre_High_Mount_Stop_Lamp_.28CHMSL.29
And no, I didn't contribute to that article
For my van, I shamelessly copied PDXWesty setup, described here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285490
Enjoy,
JMR

I've been wanting to get one of these for awhile now:
Left half is one turn, right half is the other, works as turn and brakelight. Hard to argue with safety.

I got one from JC Whitney for like $10 or $15 bucks. It was about 9" and had the capacity to flash left or right (half). The half flashing kinda seems silly once I had it ready to mount, so I just wired it for breaks only.
Once I put on some really good rear bumpers, my rear defense will be complete.
Do a search for 3rd break light. _________________ 87 Westy, 250k GW 2.4 - 2.0 , 16" wheels |

$75 is awfully expensive for that setup.
A little extra fab work yourself and you can save a bunch of money by building one with LED strips from these guys: www.oznium.com
Get a 9.5" red strip for $11.49 and two 4.7" orange strips for $6.99 each. Mount them on some angled aluminum and run wires. That should be less than 1/2 the cost. _________________ -------------------------

The OP is talking about a 3rd brakelight that also does turn signals.
The link you gave does not look like it has this feature.
To the OP, while it's on the spendy side, this looks like a nice addition. Please post pix ("PPP", a new Samba acronym?) and tell us your install adventures.
IMO, you should get the wider of the two models. A 7" light bar is not very much.

I used to use a unit meant for motorcycles called a pulsestop. When the brakes were depressed it also flashed both the rear turn signal lights. When someone was tailgaiting you and you tapped the brakes they really took notice. I took the unit off my vanagon because of all the idiots with road rage today! |

that's a great deal-- I was thinking about getting a light with turn signals in it just for additional "bling' as my husband says _________________ 1984 Westfalia a work in progress " Butters" |
