WOW, cool transformation....Can-am style, I like it. Any more pics of it in action? Either before or after. I would like to see some of yours if you don't mind. Next time I see you at a Show I would like to definitely talk to you.

Don't get out to many shows in the last few years. Bring your car to a hill, it will pass an SCCA Tech right?

Well Stonefish, if you are talking to me I think my car might pass, but I don't think I will. As of now I can't drive PERIOD Lets just say medical reasons. So I don't know if I'll be going to any shows either, if my wife can't take me, well? If my condition gets an OK from the doc's then I'll be back in business but meanwhile I'm bummed. I do 'cheat' and drive here in town but thats it. I liked your pics!!

Thanks, I'm hoping for the best. My next Doctor appointment is in the middle of March and maybe I'll find out more...and hope to get my licence back. We'll see. But in the mean time I'm working on the bug like there is no tomorrow, just had my wheels powder-coated and some more engine work, ect,...I guess it is therapy, and it keeps me busy.

The car is "Gilbert", owned by Steven Smith. Out of Oregon I believe. Really cool history on the car, he bought it from the Emory's.

I got to check out the car this past year at the Put-In-Bay Vintage race in Ohio, amazing car! _________________ Tom

I ended up with this a few years ago. Apparently it ran GT3 class quite competitively in the 90s. Tube chassis, Type 3 front beam, Type 3 rear suspension (with adjustable coilovers on all corners), 4 wheel discs (914, I believe), fuel cell, custom made 13x10" wheels, Porsche 915 transaxle. Engine back then was a very aggressive 1915cc naturally aspirated engine with 48 IDF Webers and Superflo heads.
Unfortunately it had been repainted blue by the previous owner, and that engine is now in someone's dune buggy. Came with a fairly aggressive 1835 cc with 2 barrel Weber, CB heads, etc... that engine only lasted 3/4 of a lap of Shannonville Motorsports Park due to a spare part in the sump. (That wasn't a good day.)
Since that happened, I bought the house from the movie "The Money Pit", got married and became a dad, so the race car has been on hold for a bit!

This car was prepared by Ernie Abel of Wiarton, Ont., and was a Canadian road racing champion. From what I understand, it also ran a type 3 body for awhile.
Ernie said it had something like six oil coolers, but still ran hot! Good to see it's still around. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I chatted with Ernie about it just after I picked it up- it still has 6 oil coolers. I'm amazed that with how much history the thing has in the road racing scene here that I can't find any more old photos of it. I'd love to eventually go back to the original livery.
That's really interesting about the Type 3 body- I had no idea! _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6.
