This project almost makes the tri power seem like old news.
One of the first things I check for updates on |
I'm very lucky to work at a machine shop that has all the gear available. FYI, the tri-power will be getting a make over in the next a few months, TT anyone? _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Since I'm a tool and die maker, I have to ask. Did you check the runout in the center of the shaft after you welded it?
By fusion welding do you mean like "thermit welding"? |

this is great to watch. i must say i'm very jelous as i have wanted to make one of these for several years. i just don't have the skills, knowledge or the tools.
a quick question. from the picture the holes in the shafts look to be out of alignment, any particular reason you did it that way? |

It fits and the shaft spin normally with no hangups. I'm kind of amazed at how easy the shafts spin. I can just grab the coupler at the bottom of the shaft and both rotors spin freely, no grabing, no tightening.
I'm glad I went with paint instead of anodizing, it looks so much better that way
Here a close-up of the sight glass, I can now see the gears spining in there and check the level of the oil very easily
Here a vid of the rotation. Look at the end how they stop at the exact same time, the pitch diameter is perfect. Can't wait to run this in a couple of weeks.

Any thoughts on having each distributor's curve matched or confirmed to its counter part? They should be identical but I would want to confirm. I'm sure Glenn would love to spin them on his machine. I'm checking daily for updates on this thread...very cool.

We did check the run out it was good @ about .002. Fusion welding is basically TIG welding without the filler. I think what helped keep the shaft straight was the machined pin. It was press fit and that locked it in place while the shaft was being welding in our welding positioner. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

The two holes are independent of each outer. The one in the middle is for the drive gear, the one at the end is for the dist coupler. That's just the way they ended up. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

I PM'd Glenn a while back about this and I think he said that it's very difficult to get two distributors to match exactly since you really can only adjust the start of the curve and the maximum advance, he tried it once with a pair of distributors from a Carrera 4 cam engine and spent a lot of time just to get them close but not exact. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Really cool, but the video I want to see is when the engine is running. I'm curious how it will sound. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Maybe I missed it, but are the heads going to have twin plugs, as well?

I saw the topic, and one shot of the combustion chamber side of the twin plug mod, but have searched the forums, and not found more detail. Are there more pictures/details of the twin plug heads--like where do you screw the sparkplug in?

Well it's running. Still gotta set the timing right, adjust the idle, etc;. It's not noisy at all I was expecting a little bit of gear whine but there is none.

Ever wonder what happens inside a dizzy while accelerating, Here's your chance...

Over all I'm very happy with the results. It ran for 30 min with a few accelerations in between. I'll be pulling the dist to examine it for wear on the gears. Next in line is pulling the motor and drilling the heads for the additional spark plugs. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"
