Last year I posted an inquiry re Bronco II rear tire carrier:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=444930&highlight=bronco+rear+tire+carrier
No response. However at least two members here mentioned said carrier in their posts, one back on 2008, mentioning he would post pictures.
So far nothing.
I am about to drive a bit to acquire one of those mythic Bronco carrier and before driving across the desert I would have loved to get some information, pictures would be great of a Bronco carrier installation.
But after all, it could be that said carrier does not fit and that it was just a dream in the mind of the previous posters.
Anyway thank in advance _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

I'm very interested in this as well. Every time I pass one at the boneyard I wonder if it works... _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

Sweet homemade bull bar on the GoWesty bumpers. Any welding required?
I'd love to see Rocky Mountain Westy add something like that to their lineup. |

Here's what a bronco II carrier looks like on my old syncro.
I liked the pass. side mounting for weight distribution, but I have to say it does get in the way when you are camping and have the van opened up. Same when you are parked on the street trying to unload.
The real finesse and hassle for me was getting the swing geometry right. I had to use spacers on the top hinge so that it would sit correctly on the van. If I had to do it over I'd just make new hinges rather than try to make the aluminum ones that came with the carrier work. I did a bunch of cutting/shaving on the aluminum to makes things work.
The other hard part was building a sub-frame to go inside the D-pillar to support the carrier. Lots of trial and error here. I ended up building a frame with welded in nuts matched up to wholes I drilled in the body. Which is another aspect of this carrier that isn't for the faint of heart. Anyway, my little subframe bolted to the rear of the D-pillar, hidden right on the door jamb of the rear hatch, and then I hid another mounting bold right under the cover for the sliding door just forward of the carrier. So the sub frame was securely suspended inside the D-pillar. Really the only way to do it, as otherwise you are trying to hang the whole mess off of the van's sheet metal. X2
Also, the carrier stop and securing post is attached to the rear hatch door, so that might not be the most solid of mounting points, but it worked okay on mine.
I customized mine by moving the spare tire mounting so that it was more centered on the van, allowing just enough space for a jerry can mount that I built.
I've got a welder and I enjoy hack engineering, and most importantly, I was't in a hurry. I think these are three factors required to make something like this work. Not the best photos, but hopefully they show the basics...

Beautiful van! Why did you sell it? Great write-up on the carrier - thanks for sharing.

Escorial ....... You are Da Man. Thank you very much. Your post is invaluable to me and I do appreciate the details and photos.
Love your van, I wish mine were this exact tint, they really should have made some GreenStar, instead of Blue and whatever ElseStar.
Thank you very much. _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

|

Well now, **may** I hijack my own thread, actually I would rather say develop my thought process and widen my search
I have reviewed the results in Search regarding, the Pahtfinder and a few others and also the fancy pants custom made offers for millionaires.
Thanks to Escorial's terrific answer and post, I am starting to have serious doubts on the **easy** the installation of a Bronco carrier, which leads to the equation and question:
I need a carrier
- As light and compact as possible
- It can hold only the spare, if it can hold three jerrycans, two bicycles, three hi lift jacks and a crock pot it's ok but not really desirable.
- Carrier swings out, not UP, my wife would never be able to lift the monstruosity
- As simple and easy to install
- Not cost 3 million piastres
- Does not require changing the bumper, the steering wheel or the sliding door
- Does not have to be able to resist going across, djebels, rice paddies or fech fech.
I do apologize if anyone is **indisposed** by this diversion which is only a quest for the easy, simple, and El Cheapo carrier, IF it does exist
If it does NOT exist, then here comes the "donut" secured behind, on the back of driver or passenger seat.
I tried to be diplomatic and smooth I hope it works

Thanks for the kind words. I sold it to start another project, try something different. I've had dozens of vans but this was the best one. Thought I wouldn't miss it...but pulling up these photos makes me miss it more than I care to admit. I guess it's incentive to get my other syncro camp-worthy and trail-worthy ASAP!
Glad the tire carrier info was of use.

Yes welding and cutting was required. The center part is from Ford f250 truck. I cut the bottom legs off, welded it to a modified warn winch plate, and welded in the receiver. The light guards were bent and welded to flat plate then bolted to the center part.
I have since sold it to Westybob from here on the Samba. Here are some pics of my new bumper:

VisPacem, since you have had second thoughts here is the cost of my pathfinder carrier:
$10 pathfinder carrier from pick n pull, including latching mechanism
$30 heim joints
$20 1.75" metal tube, flatbar for mounting tabs and base of post
If you don't have a welder, find a friend or family member that does, or pay someone to do it and you still spent less than what most cost.
I also did one for a friend but he wanted his shorter and only holds the tire. I will try to get some more close up pics when I get a chance. _________________ Syncronize it!

Hello Franken
Thank you very much for the information. I shall certainly investigate. Could I abuse your kindness and ask if you have any photos, diagrams or details on the installation of the Pathfinder carrier.
It would be most appreciated.
I have welding capability through friends and faithful mechanic. Now all I need is see one and get one.
Thank you very much. _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

Hello again Franken
Just curiosity. the Heim joints , the 1.75" metal tube, flatbar for mounting tabs and base of post are they absolutely necessary to make the Pathfinder carrier fit or did you install them to improve to have additional capability? _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

FYI: Through an acquaintance I can get ready to go and MODIFIED Pathfinder setups with attachments and reinforcement plates for $300. I make nothing on this. He has one ready to go now which I will likely claim. I know he gets them at the Pick A Part. Down here they surely aren't just $10 though. Whatever. He does all the hard work. He should make a bit for his efforts. I am getting lazy or just have too many other things to do than get paid 5 cents and hour for my efforts! _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Another option is the carrier from a Kia Sportage. There was a thread on here a year or two ago where somebody used that one. I didn't bother to go check just now but my recollection is that it was pretty much a bolt on but does still require some kind of reinforcement inside the 'D' pillar. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

I used the post method because I did not want to mount it to the body and mess around with making support brackets for inside the body. There is not much room to work inside the body cavity there. I have seen ones mounted to the body that you can see the body flex when opening. You could also make a bracket like Gary Lees that goes in the rear hatch door jam but the bracket is curved and would need a plasma torch. Once you have the post then you could put just about any carrier you want (isuzu rodeo, kia, chevy blazer, etc.). Yes the pathfinder one is heavy but cheap and easy. The Bronco one is aluminum and really light.
Also I can remove it later and not have holes in the body. I basically used RMW design:
