Hi everyone,
I am replacing my thermostat and was just curious about a gap that I saw - I think it is no big deal, but just wanted to confirm. The only reason I ask is because there was what appeared to be a sort of seat for something about the diameter of the small spring loaded cap of the tstat and there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the housing and that little part of the tstat. This gap is present on both the old one and new one.
I'm putting it all together tonight, but not filling it up until tomorrow so I thought I would just check... _________________ '84 Westy (first owner).......but my daily driver has pedals

That's the bypass route. When the tstat opens it simultaneously closes that port.. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

side, note... which way should the pointy part of the thermostat face, I have seen conflicting diagrams. logically the pointy part should match up with the pointy part of the housing cover. _________________ 86 Vanagon 2wd, wbx 2.1 hardtop

Well, this is the orientation for a 1.9. Someone with a fancy-schmancy extra .2 liters of displacement will have to answer that one for you.
Oh yeah - and as usual, thanks 10c for the answer! _________________ '84 Westy (first owner).......but my daily driver has pedals

Yes that is how I have mine, and it looks like it couldn't go any other way. The old one that was in there before I replaced everything was quite a bit larger as far as the bottom spring seat goes and that is what got me thinking the orientation was wrong. Also when I was getting the air out I was shutting it down when the temp needle got just above half way and the thermostat wasn't hot enough to open yet. I have heard that three quarters on the gauge is normal/ok. I was having some bubbling in the expansion tank before i started tinkering/exploring, so hopefully that was because I didn't have all the air out of the system and nothing else more costly. _________________ 86 Vanagon 2wd, wbx 2.1 hardtop
