There is a fascinating story about the very early times after 1945 - we all heard the story that the English car industry were offered the lot as war reparations, right? And they concluded the shitty little car had no chance in hell of making it beyond carrying officials around in bombed out Germany.
One of the top brass of what became British Leyland a decade later, had worked his way up from grinding crown wheels for the differentials of Austin 7s or their likes in the 20s, he had noticed a high pitch whine from the beetle transaxle during the test drive. At a station like this, he stepped up and showed the operator how to set the cutters a little deeper to stop the whine. And instantly the cars became quieter and more exportable. The rest is history!

stale- this is a wonderful photo- thanks for posting it! My gosh- 60 years ago, yet there is no "ca-ca" from surface dust that got scanned in, the colors are vivid and true-to-life, it's composed with the cars level, and in focus. Did you do any enhancements, or is the original truly this good?
Did you notice the near-body color sunroof on the left Beetle? |

Rome, the pic is as found. I do agree, its a great pic, with amazing clarity.
