My guess is the worker on the right is either clamping the axle boot or filling the gear oil.
Note the ear protection for the worker putting on the brake drum, due to the power tool he uses. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Wrong side for adding fluid to a split-case.
I'd say no on the boots too, at least the outer clamp. I bet they did that later so they could be sure to be straight after transaxle vehicle installation.
I didn't notice his ear protection, seems weird only that guy would be wearing something.
The guy in the very front right I'm not sure what he would be doing in that area, unless he is simply double-checking nut torque or something.
It's weird how you can't really see any supports for the axles _________________ How to Post Photos

Actually, if you look closely, the guy on the left side of the line appears to be wearing ear protection as well.

Wanted to look up where this was; the village of Gloednitz is slightly NW of Klagenfurt in southern Austria. The hotel's facade has been modernized and the roof extended down to offer more weather protection for the 2nd floor windows; but still mostly recognizeable.

I don't think that is ear protection.
In several other period factory pics you can see that they wore hair keepers. 2 guys seem to have pretty long, wavy and greased top hair. Back then it was normal for men to wear hair keepers at work.

Cool info, I almost made a joke earlier that they were wearing hair bands but figured that was wrong.
I guess not...

Everett
In the Bernd Wiersch book 'Als der Kaefer laufen lernte' there are hundreds of pre 1955 Wolfsburg factory pics. among them on pages
88, 110, 166, 167, 178, 192
you can clearly make out those hair keepers in hig res.
They appear to have been plastic rings, rather than rubber bands. I guess most probably supplied by VW. they all seem to be the same.
I don't want to post those pics without publishers permission, as this would most probably be offensive. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

That's the first time I've seen one of those oversized brake lights in a period photo. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I wonder what he was filming? I don't see anything. |
Hopefully not a small wet spot on the sloping dam surface.
I can't remember ever seeing this vintage paint scheme. All two-tones have the contrasting paint below the side trim. Would suit a rally-look old Beetle very well without being gaudy. |
