|
|
Hate to sound like a fool but every time I have had to pull my 009 dist out when I reinstall it the condenser is bad.
What am I doing or not doing that is causing this?
Has happened 3 times with two different dist.
All on the same engine.
Thanks everybody for the help on this |

does your coil have a internal resistor? two much juice will kill them. |

plugging into wrong side of the coil? it should be going into the negative side. plugging it to the positive side will fry it as soon as you turn the key. (ask me how i know ) |

not sure of the resistor. How would I find out. I have had this running before I messed with it. And yeah I have fried them by plugging them in the wrong place!! |

it would say on the coil. if it is a bosch then more than likely it has a resistor but it came for a non vw auto parts store then not likely. |

set your multimeter to ohms and measure across the two coil terminals with all wires unhooked. the correct coil will show between 3 and 4 ohms. the incorrect coil will show between 0 and 2 ohms. if you have the wrong coil, you can add a ballast resistor to it which increases the resistance to the correct 3.x ohms. |

What leads you to believe it's bad? Pitted points? A totally bad condenser, or not one at all, will allow the points to weld together. A condenser will not burn up with 12vdc on the wire. A condenser will read open with a ohm meter. _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 44 yrs - Plan B: '81 Rabbit Diesel LS Deluxe - Plan C: '72 Ghia

When I turn my key on to power the coil I have electricity through the distributor On the green wire all the time.
Another way to explain it, the lead from the condenser is powered all the time with the points open or closed.
It never goes out
So I just assumed it was the condenser |

The points being closed 'shorts' the condenser. You may just think the points are closing. Take the green wire loose. Measure ohms from it to ground. When the points close the resistance goes to 0 when they open the meter goes to OL, 'no resistance'. BTW this trick can be used to set static timing on an engine not connected to a battery, like on an engine stand. _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 44 yrs - Plan B: '81 Rabbit Diesel LS Deluxe - Plan C: '72 Ghia

that is a good trick I will try that with my multi meter
Torsionbar
when you say that is correct
Do you mean you think the condenser is fried?
Thanks |
