Thanks PDXWesty - We have a 1" topper and use it "upstairs" and every so often "downstairs."

I learned quickly years ago that being 6'1", I have to sleep with the pillows at the back hatch.

foam pad on lower bunk helps a lot with the contours in the seat. I prefer the wider part for head, shoulders and arms, so feet at bottom. but the deciding factor is the angle we are parked at. I don't sleep well on a slope.

Head towards rear hatch, on top of the memory foam pad

Now that I've had the pleasure of sleeping downstairs a bunch of times, I can update my original post by saying:

Having the Westfalia "Weekender" (Basci Camper) interior with rear cabinet, but full width rear seat (flip-out table, no kitchen, yada-yada) , I have more bed width towards the front of the van. So even at 6'2", this the way I face. I typically have the hatch popped, so if my feet hang out a bit no problem. I also can store my glasses in the Weekender stock rear cup holder as well Very Happy

Lower bed: I don't like the idea of laying my head in the same place where back-seat passengers fart. Head to the back, not to the "rear"! Confused

Feet closest to Propex heat, with pillows propped against rear hatch. (Upstairs, my feet freeze toward rear)

This thread can be locked now, there won't be a better answer! Very Happy
I sleep head to the back to dangle my feet and got sick of my pillow falling on the floor.

head at the back so we can look up and see the stars though the back window Very Happy
we might change out the rear bench seat and the foam in the back to something firmer, then it all being flat, it won't matter so much which way around we sleep, no rear seat passengers means no farty end of the bead Wink

I sleep with my head towards the hatch when its warm. But if it's cold my feet go towards the hatch so I can turn on the buddy heater without getting out of my sleeping bag. And yes when its cold I opt for the sleeping bag over blankets.

Depends on the weather. Only two in our Westy. Nice weather out in open space - head towards rear with hatch open to be able to look up at the sky. Most any other condition head towards front. Never use the top bunk. I also get slightly claustrophobic with head to the rear and the hatch not open.

To help prevent cold feet upstairs, here's a down baffle that my bride made (mentioned a page or two ago):

Its not simple.
Head against rear hatch if I want to read before going to sleep, hatch supports pillow.
Head toward the front if I want to watch a movie before going to sleep, lap top sits on table.
Daughter sleeps on top bed, when she comes camping I try to raise the front of the van by one inch so she does not slide and fall on the floor during the night. In that case I sleep with the head toward the front so my food does not get back out during the night.
Still I prefer the van perfectly leveled with my head towards the back. The cushion in the cargo area has less bumps so its more comfy for the shoulders and my feet usually stick out over the edge because I am 6' tall. I have a 1 in memory foam topper that adds about 20% to my comfort level, I wish I could find something better that still stores on top when the roof is down.
Alex

EV MV weekender. Head to front of bus, always, just like on a sailboat, both up top and on bottom. The EV weekender bed is really comfy even for this 6-1 driver

Always head near the back hatch, because I can use it like a head-board for pillows, prop up to read, etc. Only issue is whacking your head, but I solved that by taking out the Westy upper cabinet Rolling Eyes
Unfortunately, in my new hightop, that upper cabinet above the bed isn't removable, so i'm thinking i'll have to start sleeping the opposite way... Idea
