Where are you going camping? Washington state

Since we got Butters up and running, now we're thinking of where to go camping... well maybe after I join AAA Rolling Eyes

we're probably going to just do some three day week-end kinds of trips for starters... heading out from Auburn... anyone have some suggestions or favorite spots they would be willing to share?

The coast, baby, the coast. Actually, head to Aberdeen and then Astoria and Cannon Beach.

That's a great start for finding places to camp around here.

Whidbey Island, Ft. Ebey state park is really nice in winter and feels much farther away than it really is. You can take a ferry or drive around over Deception Pass, both really scenic and fun.

Most of the National Forest campgrounds are covered in snow right now. Be aware that most State Park campgrounds close the primitive sites in winter so you'll be forced to pay for a site with full hookups, somewhere around $28!

Two weeks ago we camped at Ike Kinswa State Park near Mossyrock. It was nice and hardly anyone else was there. We're lucky to live in a place where you can camp year round, as long as you don't mind rain. And darkness. And cold.

That brings back memories of some great camping trips in Washington. I did have a Westy there, but most of the trips I recall were tent camping/hiking trips.

Olympic national park, hiking the coastal section and finding some of the coolest things on the beach and elaborately built campsites using the driftwood and other stuff that washed up on shore. A whale carcass that is probably still there. Beautiful coastal scenary. And you can hike as little or as far as you like. I suppose you could camp in the westy and do day hikes, but that would be cheating yourself. The drive out aroundthe Pennisula is great too.

Taking the boat ride across Lake Chelan and hiking the last bit into town and lakeside camping. Very fond memories from that trip. And a cool little town at the end that has no roads to it.

The Chugach river area is good Westy camping land. But probably doesnt open up til mid summer.

Mt Rainier drives and day hikes. Amazing when the wildflowers come out.

Sea Kayaking and camping in the San Juan Islands. We stayed at the little island with permitted camping just off Friday Harbor. We paddle into town for drinks and headed back to camp later. Better under a full moon. I never took the westy across on a ferry but that might make a nice camping trip.

That is such a great area. I miss the ocean.

Riff Lake outside Mossyrock has a nice campground. Always a big fan of camping at Fort Camby, near Illwaco and Long Beach.

I planning a few on the Oregon Coast and Crater Lake.

Lots of good little state parks on the hood river canal. Not far to drive around from where you are either.

I took the lady to Elwha river campground, very nice, very nice.

We did a couple day trips without the van (in our cabriolet) out at Raineer coming back from our 13 day vacation/drive to CA, came back through eastern OR, tricities and hit the backside of raineer.

What a gem. I didnt even imagine how beautiful it was out there.

The beaches in WA are awesome, as are the islands.

I would suggest Ocean shores, and North!

There are some really great places all through the cascades, lots of glaciers..

One of our spots were're heading to start of the season is ROSS LAKE!

Go towards mt. Baker, and right next to the Nooksak river there are a bunch of camp sites that you can pay for, but there is also some free camping right along the river up the mountain across from the silver spruce(might be silver pine) campground. there is a large parking lot drive through that and there will be another road, along that road is free camping spots right along the river. beautiful views, and great water.

If you're willing for the drive, the extreme NE corner up in the Selkirks is pretty nice any time of the year... I love up around Metalline Falls and there's always Gardner Cave to check out, and wild berries galore if during the right season. Or you can jump over to Idaho and discover what is Priest Lake... if you're lucky or do some research, maybe you can find the natural waterslide Wink

Oh out 524! Yes, a company river rafting trip brought us up there for the weekend. We camped in the very lot!!

This area is just outright beautiful.

Mapped it incase someone wants to check this out! This is certainly 2wd van friendly, we took a slightly lowered cabriolet on most of it.

We really like the Tieton River area, there are many great camping spots along the river. And there's usually great weather and not many people at all. Plus, if you like rock climbing, it's all around you.

Penrose State Park on the Key Peninsula. Available foods to harvest when in season. Oysters, Crabbing, Berry picking. Hike out on the 1/3 mile long spit at low tide. Watch for moon snails. Oysters on the left side of the beach and crabs from the left side of the spit.

three rivers, NM, City of Rocks, NM, Oliver Lee, NM...possibilities

We enjoyed our visit to Mt. St. Helen's (hope for clear weather for the full effect) and I stumbled upon a great collection of windmills made of junk metal and donated to a little city park in Electric City.

aaaaaaah. I need to go camping. There are so many great places to camp in the PNW.

My van is sitting in my driveway with the bad trans almost out. It's been really hard to get motivated to crawl under there and finish removing it when it's raining and snowing and windy and dark.

One day I'm going to build a heated shop with a 10' door on the front.

Cape disappointment state park is a good option right now. The storms bring in some huge waves that crash on the jetties. Looking down from the lighthouses, you wonder how any of the ships made it through in the old days of sail.
