I need to know how to install the door check rod/stop repair kit on my doors. I would assume that the door panels need to come off, so that i can mount the kit from the inside of the door. Is this correct? I am going to buy the kit from Mid America. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Door panels do not have to come completely off. All you need to be able to do is get your hand into the hollow of the door and grab the old and install the new rod. You should be able to pop (carefully) the panel off from the perimeter, but leave the door handle and window crank in place. It's pretty easy and obvious after that. Don't be surprised, however, that the new check rods seem make no or little improvement. I just went through all this and the doors still swing freely. It's not like doors on a new car.

I ran into this issue and wanted some updated opinions. My driver side door swings out farther than my passenger. I've also noticed a gap in the lower door sill that lets air in while driving down the freeway, probably due to my bent door hinges... It seems that I have a few issues, but to stop the door from swinging so freely, do I need a whole new door stop assembly and rubber stops or are these easy to rehab?

Depending on the year of the car, they can be different. 62-79 uses the same style. Not sure if older style is even available and I have only ever replaced the 62-79 style, so thats what I will talk about. As mentioned, you can do it without removing the entire inner panel, BUT its a lot easier to do it with it removed.

Get yourself a couple little E clips for the pins that attach the strap to the body - they get lost easily.

Now, on your exisiting straps there is a rubber bumper that comes apart over time, allowingthe door to swing wider than normal. You can just replace this part by removing the pin, reaching inside the door and pulling it out and slipping the new one back in. But I usually pull the whole assembly out and swap it.

REAL IMPORTANT - Look at the direction of the curve of the check strap that you are replacing and the angle of the base. The new ones work with either side and you may need to remove the strap from the base and flip it over. And its not a bad idea to verify that the originals were installed correctlty anyway.

Really this is only about a 10 minute job.

reviving an old thread as this was the closest i could find to my question.

the check rods were removed from my doors and i am just not sure how they go in exactly.
i know where they bolt to and i assume the curved portion angles out around the door seal.

they have a high side and a low side
do they get installed with the high side (inside the door) facing the outside of the door
pics from an ad

i'm sure this is 3 min job to put in but i don't want to install them back wards:)

They keep your door from opening too wide and jacking up your hinges.

They don't affect how the door opens, it still swings free, but stop the arc.

Russ, I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. I found this pic in the gallery, does it help at all?

It's a 5mm pin, maybe just a tiny amount under 5mm.

Hi all - lots of useful information on the door strap, but do you have any guidance if the bracket located in the door frame (not the door) it attaches to is broken?

How badly is it broken? Can you post a pic?

If there is not enough there to work with, you’ll probably have to install a new one- and you may have to find a donor part. WW has the strap, but not that mounting bracket.

Bummer, that is a cut and weld repair. For a temp fix, you could use a nylon or leather strap with screws on both ends, just to keep from bending the hinges and causing more damage.

Just me 2 cents.

Mark..
