Following the runaway success of the re-release of the Tamiya Sand Scorcher, our favourite model maker from Japan has re-released the so-called 'Holiday Buggy', a 1:10 scale radio control off-road VW-based sandmaster (did I hear someone say Tow'd?). The original dates back to the very early 80's, and they have sticked closely to the details of the original, right up to the driver with the cowboy hat
As it is a kit, you build and paint it yourself, and only your imagination limits how far you would go..
This is what the original box art and model looked like
Not having plans to get a Holiday Buggy myself, I am however hoping that Tamiya would re-release the Sand Rover as well, a Manx-based radio control buggy from the late 70's. I have never seen an original one in South Africa, and prices are simply out of this world on eBay... let's keep our fingers crossed!
This what a Sand Rover could look like with some modelling skills & A LOT of patience!

I had a sand scorcher. They were very sophisticated for being an unassembled kit. I sure wish they would remake the Sand Rover though. |

I bought a used/abused Sand Rover body from the UK a few weeks ago. That's where most seem to be. It needs restoration. I was thinking of putting it on an old Associated Electric RC10 chassis, but the new Holiday Buggy chassis looks like it would be perfect. |

Is it just me.. or does the driver in the Sand Rover and Holiday Buggy box art look alot like Steve McQueen??
....and the plot thickens! This is a buggy that apparently belonged to McQueen. Tell me it doesn't look like a Tamiya Holiday buggy??

There's a guy in the UK that makes those aluminum front bumpers and the roll bars. I got a set for mine. |

Yep, the Holiday Buggy rerelease is pretty cool! Kinda fustrating they put holes in the hood for the front shocks, and some nicer wheels would be cool...
If anyone wants to build one of these, be advised the body is a very weird material, like milk carton jug plastic, very "oily" and hard to paint a different color than the stock blue. Would have been nice if it was lexan, or styrene like all their other kits...
I am building a Sand Scorcher myself, and would also LOVE to see the Sand Rover re-released.... |

An excellent clip of a Sand Rover in action - some places it looks so real, it is almost impossible to tell that it is a 1:10 model! :hangloose:

A few years ago I bought 2 new in the box, Sand Rovers from a hobby shop that was going out of business. I have never opened either of them but the video has me thinking of opening one of them.
Maybe I'll wait for a rerelease? _________________ Jerry...

I saw an ebay auction for a NIB Sand Rover a while back. I'm pretty sure one would be worth at least $600-$700. |

Before the economy tanked, they were getting $1200/$1400 on a regular basis. _________________ Jerry...

Don't open them!
Buy a used body, restore it however you like it and put it on a Holiday Buggy chassis. |

From the Volksworld site, Apr 7

Tamiya Sand Rover Buggy .
Our publisher came over to our desks today all happy and eager to show us a new toy!
When we got to his office there on the desk was a Tamiya Sand Rover surrounded by a load of bubble wrap and a box like they had been ripped open on Christmas morning to get at the goods inside.
Richard (our publisher) was grinning from ear to ear!
I guess we should mention that, although a highly respected publisher for IPC Inspire group, a father, and an ADULT, Richard is really into his radio controlled cars. And not just any old radio controlled cars, oh no! He likes to collect the cool, retro and rare stuff!
He has a good sized collection (10 I think I recall him saying), which include the Holiday Buggy and Sand Scorcher - toys that almost any '80s kids will remember dreaming about!
Anyway, Richard is going to fix this one up and liven up its power with a bigger engine! We will keep you posted of his progress and no doubt throw some footage online in the video section.

The only licensed Meyers Manx toys were the AMT plastic model, the Franklin Mint diecast and the Hot Wheels toys. |

Got my Holiday Buggy! Haven't built it yet, might leave it in the box for a while to see if they'll bring out the Sand Rover...
This cool video shows a slightly modified Holiday Buggy!
Link
However, last year I found a near mint Tamiya Fast Attack Vehicle (FAV)
Last night I saw on the Tamiy site that they will be re-releasing the FAV as well, so I suppose the chances are good that the Sand Rover will eventually appear as well!
Quote: |
Originally released in 1984, the Fast Attack Vehicle was an R/C buggy that reproduced the look and feel of a special type of a military vehicle. It featured a realistic body and roll cage and offered superior off-road performance. This is the re-release of the Fast Attack R/C car. |

Could not agree more as a Collector of vintage RC models. Because the Sand Rover is too expensive for me - assuming one is sold - I converted an old Gas Cox dune buggy into a modern electrical version. The chassis is all self made from Carbon sheets using 4WD components. The front axle is only enganged when the rear tires loose traction (variable 4WD drive). I realized it by inserting a one wheel clutch on the propeller shaft.
The motor model is from the static Revell 1/9 scale VW Kubel kit, and the Turbo is a left over from the static 'Tamiya Porsche 934 in 1/12 scale.
You find more shots of the model here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=73220&sid=19163
