What about a sender? (for the tank). Could you use a beetle mechanical sender? _________________

I have a guage and sender that would most likeley be usable in a barndoor, although not correct. It's for an oval hump style tank, but the mount is on the filler neck. One small hole drilled in the neck for mounting. Like I said, not correct, but in 1959, after driving your bus for 5 years, and you got tired of wondering if you had gas or not, this did the trick.

I already talked to the king of the repro Dehn gas gauges. He and I agree that there would not be enough sold to even cover the tooling to make them. I was going to send him the very same one in the picture above as a sample. |
Do you still have it? If so let's give Oval56 the cable length and get these repo'd |

Fitting location
Deluxe has the fourth window...
I guess the cable would travel down between the third & fouth window? Or after the fouth?
Dehne installed in the ex-Todd 54 deluxe...instruction sheet seems to indicate it should sit further forward?
Maybe it had to sit back because of the deluxe 4th window issue?
Measuring on my deluxe I reckon the length from the top of the gauge (if located in the forward position) to the sender would be 3700-3800mm....allow another 350mm for a deluxe for it to travel beyond the 4th window...maybe this would be easier on the cable curvature _________________ -StockRocks- |

it is no problem to make one... i can do it with the early sending unit i pictured.
what i need is the exact cable length from end of the tube tp beginging to the aluminiumtube....
if am i right, the aluminizmtube from gauge body to tube is around 180mm... the rest is same shit like original dehne thats not a problem...
i can do a small batch of 10 for barn samba or bus, but cablelength is the main issue.
the point is the sender, there are to styles availible, the early one i posted, and tha later one with the casted housing.... the casted housing version is at the moment my big problem, becaus i still wait for the castings i ordered 3 month ago.... the gauges itself could be ready in 2 or 3 weeks if needed. the sendingunits will take a bit time at the moment... _________________ www.oval56.com

Are you talking about making this gauge? Also if you notice there is a small bracket the holds the cable and makes it turn straight down towards the tank. I`m thinking installing one in a non barndoor the cable may need to be longer cos the Barndoor tank sits higher versus the later years where the tank sits lower. _________________ CRG

With a repro of the Dehne, I can see an issue of getting the cable to move freely without binding in the tube, due to the excessive length. I'm sure resolving this issue took a lot of trial and error when the originals were built. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

jep, but i need details on cablelength for barn or later, and also a blueprint of the extra clamp and the triangle on the back to make it 100%
will post some pictures tonigt of the gauges and sendingunits i make at the moment... the thing is, it is easy to convert a split od oval metal dehne gauge to a barn or samba gauge... if i get the details cabellength _________________ www.oval56.com

One should be able to hide the cable within the pillar ( the 3rd from B pillar, in front of the last window) before installing the headliner with some small holes cut on top and into the engine compartment.
The cable looks more than out of place in a perfectly restored Dlx IMO. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

jep you are right...
i did some dehne gauges which were used in airplaines (piper) with 2,5m cables... teh normal cable is not working, so i tried a other way and that works okay.... the best way is tu use the really early sending unint, there you have mor chances to get it right adjusted after installing. _________________ www.oval56.com

Having seen this I thought I'd have a go at producing it with an broken bug Dehne face I had.
Not exact, and could be improved upon if producing many,

Here you go Five2,
Also if you notice the light bulb holder is smaller or shorter on the real deal probably due to the placement of the gauge so it wont hit the roof part ? _________________ CRG

so that's a Beetle one, revised for Bus
have you extended the cable yet?
my tank has already been cut at some point...
regarding routing, it'd be nice if just the face & surround showed?
bracket under headlining, all cable/conduit...not sure if this is really feasible
the instruction sheet shows the cable in a dotted line..maybe solid on the rear curve...before it hits the kombis rear card
maybe this is showing it virtually all behind the headlining?
bit of a clunky install compared to the Beck & MotoMeter?
'bit of an issue routing from that dash, Jorg'
'tell you what - lets stick it high up top left, sideways'
just adds to the coolness though?
& where do you route the wire for the map light?
anyone seen a 50s bus with an original Dehne gauge installation?
searched the Gallery, nothing
regarding cheaper alternatives, an early Ghia fuel gauge (57/58/59) would probably sit well on the dash? Similar to the MotoMeter
