two questions
1. I have a 1979 vw bug convertible , fuel injected- what type is it I,II, etc. and how do you tell?
2. I have been researching around and get varying answers for the following:
When the key is moved to "on", the first position, not start, should the fuel pump run for some brief time? According to "how to keep your bug alive" it should run for 1.5 seconds, other sources say it should run also. Then other sources (itinerant Air-cooled forums) say it should only run when the key is in the start position. Even Samba archives have both answers. Can anyone definitively answer this and name the source?

You have a Type I Beetle. All Beetles (Bugs) are Type I. Type I also includes the Karmann Ghia style as well. Same chassis and running gear, different body.

Van's are Type 2
Fast Backs, Square backs, Notch backs and Type3 Ghias are Type 3
Those ugly new creations, 411 / 412 are a Type 4 (sorry, personal opinion slipped in there) Shocked

L Jetronic book on how the system works.

The fuel pump should only work when the key is activated to run the starter motor and once started it will only work provided air is moving through the air flow meter. If the car should stall and the key left on, the pump will not run for the air flow meter flap springs back to fully closed.

As clearly seen in this wiring diagram the double relay is powered by the ignition switch (D) as it activates the starter solenoid (red/black wire) via the start position of the ignition switch (terminal 50).

This power (also red/black wire) closes the connection in the relay (J40) energizing the fuel pump (G6) (via the red/blue wire).

You will also notice that the air flow meter (G19)(utilizing terminal 86 connecting 36b) can also energize the fuel pump relay solenoid while the car is running and the intake air keeps the flap open. Engine stops, flap closed, circuit is broken to the relay solenoid, fuel pump stops running.

If you examine the wiring diagram you will notice that there is no power fed to the double relay to activate the solenoid when the ignition switch is in the on / run position (termminals X & Su black/yellow & grey/black). Other items are energized such as the wipers and turn signals but not the fuel pump relay.
