After working on my '69 Bay for the past couple months I finally got it running correctly.
It came with a dual Dellorto set up that was overkill for the engine. I got rid of those and purchased a dual Kadron set up. That too was really just not right for it. The engine felt lopey and hesitant.
After messing with the Kadrons for about a month I grabbed the old single Holley/Weber 5200. I ordered a rebuild kit and new manifold set up. I cleaned up the carb, rebuilt it and slapped it on and...surprise, the van fired right up and sounded like it should. Took it for a test drive and there was plenty of power w/ no hesitation.
Yesterday we took it out for it's inaugural run to the river. Ran great cruising along at 60 mph along the old highway. Here's Slayer Hippie hangin' at the Columbia River:
Feels great to have brought this beast back to life. It had been sitting outside at my dad's house since 1985. _________________ D. Magista

too cool, man! Nice work. I'm more a dual carb fan, but whatever works! _________________ - Travis

Cool, looks like a non-walkthrough. _________________ Bone stock 1970 non-walkthrough "Station Wagon" bus

It is a non-walk through. Original upright 1600 rebuilt by my pops in 1985 with all sorts of Berg goodies. That is a moonroof, my pops installed it way back. You can open it or pop the pins out and remove it completely.
Dual carbs would be fine but getting 'em to work right was too much for me...for now. I may try again later but right now it's running perfectly, "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

I live in Portland so "Slayer Hippie" seemed like an appropriate tribute (even though he is currently in jail for some Drugstore Cowboy type hijinx).
Quick background on the bus:
It's been in our family since 1975. My dad bought it from the original owner. Still have the original manual w/ all the service documentation, etc. Did many camping trips in it until about 1984 when he pulled the engine and completely rebuilt it. He put about 500 miles on it. Then from 1985 until a few months ago it sat out in front of his house in Seattle. He was going to sell it but I asked if I could have it. He said yes.
Anyway, my dad and I are tickled pink to have it running again. It's a pretty special bus, at least to us. I have rear and middle seat for it, the interior is in good shape and the front clip is rusted out but whatevs...it's OG. _________________ D. Magista

Thanks for naming your bus after my dear cousin's alter ego. I miss him, and hope he's well. |
