Agreed as well. I miss talking with him, or just asking a dumb question, or even having a beer together (he didn't drink too many though). Mostly his endless knowledge and friendship are what I miss. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I cannot believe it's two years already, since I lost my best friend, Joanne, 3-17-11 and our beloved Russ, 3-18-11, within hours of each other.
I Miss you both Very much! _________________ Sue

Three years already!
It still makes me do a " Double Take," whenever I'm reading along in some older post, and one of his replies pops up!

yes, he was always cool. missed out to see him on some of my trips to Omaha. Would have loved to see his place in IA.
I love that type of quietness in the middle of beautiful wide open farms. |

Yup, I agree Glenn, it really doesn't seem like it either. I had just started moving the pile of snow, so I could get the T-34 back into the shop over the weekend too.
I do miss talking to him though, even IF it was for nothing more than to BS. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I had a conversation with Marilyn Wolfe three months ago. She sold the Wolfe Estate about a year after Russ past away. She lives in a small town a bit further south from Indianola.
She's doing well, quite involved with her church. _________________ Feel My Pain l Sage Ad World |

Yeah, that's what she said when we talked with her a week or so ago. She seems happy to be in her new house, and the kids are doing well too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I haven't been very involved with ACVWs for the last few years, but spurred on by my brother, I've been working on getting my '67 Beetle roadworthy again, which led to a couple of Samba visits to refresh my memory. With a little trepidation, I did another search that took me to this thread.
Sometime between 2008 and 2010, I took a roadtrip out to Indianola to hang out with Russ. I can't remember the specific reason or part I came out to pick up, but it was a very enjoyable trip. Russ and Marilyn were both happy to host us for the day -- I got a chance to drive the Fasty, we dug through parts, talked about tools, he showed me his Type 3 Ghia (and Fox ), and we laughed about certain Samba characters.
I can't remember what kind of cancer Russ had (bladder? stomach?) but the long-term prognosis wasn't good, and there was a wistfulness when he talked about the work that the Type 3 Ghia would need to make it complete. Somebody else posted that he'd need at least another lifetime to do everything he wanted, and that sounds about right.
This has been a really touching thread. Whenever I reflect on Russ's knowledge and generosity, I think "why am I not more like him?" _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

I believe it was bladder cancer he was suffering from, but it was actually stomach cancer (new to him) that finished him off.
I ended up with his Type 3 Ghia, and he got to help with some of the progress, and was very happy that it was getting rebuilt to see the road again. He did get to see pics of it after it was painted, before he died, and was quite happy (according to Marilyn). On our way out to the t-3 Invasion in Colorado Springs, we stopped by the house, and Marilyn loved how the T-34 looked, and came out. She ended following us out there, and we ended stopping by on our way back. Here's a pic of that day (that my wife took).
We were trying to replicate a pic that Russ and I did (that my wife took) of when we rolled the T-34 out of his shop, before it went home with us.

I met Russ on the Samba roughly 2006 or 2007 I can't recall exactly when. But had the pleasure of making a good friend. He told me he had a T3 Ghia with a wrecked nose we talked vw's on line and on the phone. When he found out I am a logistics guy he asked me to help him move a front clip be bought a few blocks from where I live. I said no problem at all. I found the seller I strapped it to a pallet and off it went. I will never forget how greatful he was for the help but more so how happy he was to just get the front clip. I had many invitees to visit him but sadly none ever worked out I am blessed we were friends and that Bob completed Russ's dream _________________ FUCK CANCER FUCK CANCER FUCK CANCER!!

I clicked on that "Wolfie" thread in your sig, Bob, without connecting the dots at first and am really enjoying it. So glad that car ended up in good hands. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Yeah, it was an interesting project, and I'm glad we were able to fullfill Russ's dream of returning the car back to the road. Everyone that had contacted him about it, wanted it for parts. He really wanted it rebuilt/restored, which is why I ended up with it, as he knew I'd rebuild/restore the car and drive it. It took me 2 years to do, but I did drive it out to Colorado for the 2012 Type 3 Invasion. We put 3,000 miles on it in 10 days, with only minor things going wrong (like a broken speedometer shaft (not a cable), and a bad used starter). Can't complain 1 bit. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Checked out a thread on the T3 forum today, with several old posts from Russ. Good to have this site, which keeps the knowledge/ memory of those who have given it so freely to others, alive.
Gave me an excuse to "bump" this. 3-18-15, will be four years, since he left us. _________________ Sue
