|

Hey, I am trying to remove the ignition witch on my 72 bay window but, I just cant see how it comes off. Do I have to take the whole column off and slide it down? Or is there an easier way to do this? If anyone can guide me in the right direction, thanks! |

on my 1971 I had to make a tool out of a coat hanger to be able to release the lock and tumbler. They have to come out before the housing can be removed. See the thread here.

So, I can't get the lock and tumbler out of my '72. Is there a hole in the back (like a '71) of the housing to depress the spring? I have fished and can't find anything. Is a '72 a one year only as well? My manuals don't explain much. Bentley included. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. _________________ '56 T-1

Yes.. it does have that hole. You need to bend a coat hanger to reach around and push on the pin. Then pull the tumbler out. It's a pain in the butt to push that little unseen pin in the cylinder lock though. Good luck.
Ps. I have a 72 as well and performed this when I first bought it. The po had no keys. _________________ 1969 Transporter

When I got my '72 it had a frankensteined push button on the dash to start it. Getting the proper ignition bits back in the column was a PITA. A very tight fit. I didn't have the tiny screw that locks it down either.. 3mm or something like that.. so far that hasn't been an issue though because everything is so jammed in there. Nice to have a key again though.
Good luck. Got any photos of your '72? |

Thanks. I just had my keys made this afternoon. One key works all the locks and the ignition. I'll get some photos up soon. _________________ '56 T-1

I did the same thing as SG did. I had to lube the keylock a bit to get it to slide out. 40 years of grime in there.....try this link http://www.dolgyfre.adsl24.co.uk/spooky/barrel/barrel.html It can be done without removing the column. Careful not to lose the tiny grub screw. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

It's all back together and works like new. This was all performed inside the bus without removing the steering column or lock housing. It was fairly easy. The hardest part was finding the little hole on the back of the ignition/steering lock body. _________________ '56 T-1

I have a 71... But so much has been changed in this bus. I was able to get the lock out without removing the steering wheel, and I was able to get the tumblers out... The housing is the solid type without the separate electronic portion. It is integral to the housing.
Here is the problem:
If I remove the tumbler and put a screwdriver in, the mechanism turns to run mode then to start and springs back to run.
On the tumbler portion the key works fine, and when the key is inserted the little arm in the back of the tumbler extends a little and moves freely to the stops.
The back of the little arm looks factory edged and not broken or snapped off.
When the tumbler is inserted into the housing fully, the key turns and the steering wheel lock mechanism actuates fully, but the (Run circuit) does not engage, and the (start circuit) does not engage, and the spring resistance of the start circuit is not felt.
What is wrong here?
It seems that the tumbler is too short.
Any help will be appreciated. |

Can you take picture of the electrical portion? It should come out the back of the housing as I recall. On my '71, the hole that the shaft went into was split, so I had to replace the electrical part as well. That may account for why you don't feel it engaging the switch. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

LoL, the plastic electrical part fell out of the back today... it was cracked. So, now I just get the plastic piece replaced? Does the year have to match and be t2? |
