I'm currious how this is comming along. any more experience yet in snow, logging roads, wet grass and mud. |
I got a chance to try some more jeep roads, a little sand, and some slippery mud.
Here is a pick of a hill that I had no trouble getting up when it was dry. Most people would think of this as a syncro type road, but it was doable with the 2WD LSD. It was steep enough, that I think a stock 2wd would have started spinning a wheel and not gotten up. It rained later and was very slick clay on the way out. It would have been impassable except we were going down.
I want to see how it does in snow like on the way to the ski areas. But that may have to wait til next year.

I am somewhat impressed with LSD
At SyncroFest I caravaned to the top of Hollister with a 2wd Vanagon with rear LSD. It did amazingly well. He did use more speed and momentum, and lacked a granny gear, but he had Mud Terrain tires, and went pretty much everywhere.
otoh, I also saw a couple 2wd drive vans, with no LSD, do things I was unwilling to do with my 3 knob syncro, so ultimately, the driver's skills make the biggest difference.
back to the benefits of LSD, I saw the 2wd mentioned, do a spin out from a stop, first his Passenger Rear side tire threw a rooster tail, then his Driver Rear did it.. obviously traction loss did cause a power transfer. This is a very good thing, and exactly what the LSD is supposed to contribute.
another place I think LSD could be really beneficial is in the front of a syncro.
though ultimately LSD will not transfer power when a wheel is in the air, for that you still really need a Locker. |

how about sand? what are the effects of using the LSD or whatever it's actually called that they are putting on the vans, but in sand. I took my 2wd to the beach and couldn't stop because I had momentum on the sand, but I was wondering if I could have stopped and ostensibly started again in loose sand.

I hear ya..
I attended a couple jeep gatherings back in the day.. and there was an event where guys took a course in 4WD.. using LSD or lockers or whatever they had..
Then they'd try the same course in 2WD.
Better drivers could often times get thru in open D 2WD where novice drivers were struggling in 4WD and more. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

To simply choose "locker version" for the rear, would get the same result and cost a couple thousand$ less than putting a TBD in the Syncro front. Except for situations where you want max live traction without locking the rear.

I think you are referring to a TBD. LSD is limited-slip differential, which generally does not rotate free with one wheel in the air. The Peloquin (if that is what we're discussing) is a TBD (Torque Bias Differential), which can rotate freely with one tire in the air.
However, with the TBD, just a touch on the brake pedal (or handbrake) throws power to both wheels. This is useful when you get in a situation where you didn't 'lock' the locker in time. _________________

I recently got a rebuilt tranny + peloquin from Darrel at AA transaxle. Took the van up to the mts a few weeks ago, and it seemed to do great in the icy parking lot at a-basin!

I thought you had an auto tranny, I was told Daryl does not work on automatics. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Just for your information, it is also possible to build in a syncro switchable 100% diff lock into a 2wd gearbox.
I did buy a complete rebuild aap gearbox some months ago with the syncro diff lock:

WOW - nice work Dave.
Video never conveys the truth of the terrain.
I'll go with you guys (on the syncro tour) next year!

True that. Some of the areas I really wanted to get video of Dave going through were very tough terrain and due to the fact that he had to keep his momentum up, I missed it. If and when I get another 1WD van, I will go this route for sure. IMPRESSIVE! _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

A few more pics of testing the Peloquin 2wd limited slip differential.
I think I have taken it to its limit. Issues now are more often lack of a lower gear and ground clearance. You can occassionally get off level enough so you loose traction, like these photos, but most times you can find a line that will let you keep both rear wheels fairly level. I have found the emergency brake trick does not work well in difficult situations. Maybe if you had a brake for each rear wheel, it would work better. Anyway, I am satisfied that I can get far enough off road to find some great campsites.
Check out the angle, it felt more tippy than it looks here.
Glad I had my come-along with me. The challenge was worth it, I got to wake up to a moose staring at me through the rear hatch.

what you need is a hydraulic handbrake with a bias adjuster used side to side instead of front to rear. im planning on some major brake plumbing work in the future. i just rebuilt my auto and had the diff rebuilt with a peloquin. i love it but ive already had to use the handbrake trick. i expected this going in and knew that it wouldnt act like a locked diff. Id do the hydraulic handbrake but it would pointless after i convert to syncro trans w/ locker+peloquin. nevertheless i plan on at least installing a brake bias adjuster for the normal brakes. if anyone has tried to steer and back down a snowy hill using the foot brake youll know why. |
