No problems clearing your header pipe? Doesnt bang it or anything? I gotta tell you guys.I think ive read about all the cannons hurt power threads and thought..They cant be THAT bad. My car will hold and even accel at very low speeds in 4th. It would never do that with the cannons. _________________ I do drive a Honda.

It is very close to the #1 tube, but does not hit, even when driving. Quite will driving moderately, but sounds real throaty once it is opened up.
I still to position it exactly where I want it and tighten the clamp. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

One last comment, if you notice on the top picture I just posted, the collector angles rearward. If your collector does not angle like this, it may not fit. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Hey,mine does too. Same Empi you have. No reason it shouldnt work. My biggest concern was the #1 header because I knew it would be close. _________________ I do drive a Honda.

Has anyone seen the exhaust that has two separate mufflers vertical near the valve covers? It was a higher end manufacturer. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society - President |

Cannons may not be the most efficient thing out there but the factory liked them so much they put them into production on the 1944 TM E9-803 Kubelwagen, what a great sound heading off to the front line....
any takers? |

I was thinking reproduction 1973 VW Thing, with chrome tips instead of the dog leg tips that fit through the bumper. Those would provide proper heat riser hook-ups for single carb engines too. I would hope VW built them to not cost power over the stock Bug exhaust.
Of course, one has to define "perfect." Power, sound, carb heat, car heater, body clearance, and looks, are all points to consider. _________________

The Australian Country Buggy came with factory fitted duals, each side was separate like a Thing exhaust. Both the Thing and Country Buggy exhaust have internal baffles and are not straight through, maybe that helps with scavenging? Why would the factory fit dual individual exhausts if there was a substantial power loss? |

The reproduction Thing Exhausts are not very good. The heat risers are like the crappy headers with the ports on each head, not one head port and the other side pipped into the muffler.
I have a '73 and '74 Thing and getting a good functioning original style exhaust has to be custom made.
Speaking from experience, going from a true 4-into-1 header on my stock engine '73 to the original style split dual exhaust hurt the performance.
The Thing was not about performance for VW, it was about ground clearance. Remember, these had factory skid plates, custom rear torsion housings, (over a beetle/ghia) and the custom front spindles to get additional ground clearance. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Joe and Oldfart,
you both pose good questions and arguments, I guess at the end of the day it's all about compromise, what's the highest thing on you priority list and what are you prepared to forego to get there.
I guess that's why we all have such a massive choice in Exhaust systems.
I have a pair of Canons on my Buggy, they don't perform as well as the merged system I had before, but clearance and overhang were the highest things on my priority list. I am working on a set of headers with a balance pipe between the engine and trans-axle then a 180 turn on each side and then the round muffler.
Basically dual canons with a balance pipe. I will run it on a dyno without balance pipe and then with and see if the return is worth the effort.
Happy to post it when complete in a few months. |

Is there any 4 into 1 that does not extend behind the engine? Preferably something quiet, as my other car is an electric vehicle. I don't like to work with the exhaust back there and I don't like the look of the exhaust back there. (that is a matter of personal opinion, many beautiful buggies have "normal" 4 into 1 systems) _________________

I Finally got the Hyabusa Mufflers on, they produce a great sound and much more torque.
And some sound on YouTube

Seriously doubt the added Hyabusa power, probably the fact that merged 4 into 1 give a 4-5 hp gain and split dual cost you 4-5 hp... So effective you are down 10 precious horses....
But yeah, the probably sound good...

Dale,
I would say the baffle-less crap strait thru mufflers that came with the duals lost the system about 20 ft pounds of torque and created an incurable backfire, that would have also robbed horsepower.
The Busa Mufflers have seriously good multi baffle set up designed by Yamaha's F1 R&D team for Suzuki to produce max torque and horsepower for a very short exhaust system. I would say I now have the 20ft/lb back and some power now that it no longer back-fires. |
