I have a '67 Walk through bus. It came with NO seats. I'm looking for some info and pics for reference. I've tried a few times to figure this out and now im trying again.

What is the difference between early and late split walk through front seats?

Is there a difference between the 40 of the 60/40 front bench?

I understand how the drivers mounts (sliders) but how does the passenger mount? Pics?

I have a drivers seat that is just the frame and springs mounted in my bus right now. The seat actually HITS the wrap around part when pushed back. Seems like its not right for my bus as it could go much further back if it didnt hit that edge.

Finally, anyone have the seats i need for a fair price?

Thanks!

Not sure I can answer all your questions but here is a shot at some of them. The driver's seat in the late (64-67) walk through is the same as the driver's seat in 40/60 bench. That's why it is much easier to find a driver's seat for a walk through than the passenger seat. The diver's seat has screw in and out adjusters in the lower frame of the bottom seat to adjust the angle of the back rest. If these are screwed all the way in and the seat is pushed all the way rearward the upper rail of the seat back will normally hit the bulkhead as you describe. Perhaps that is the problem.

The backrest of the passenger seat attaches to the top of the bulkhead with two small hook brackets that fit into the two holes in the top front of the passenger bulkhead. The bottom attaches with notched tubes in the back of the bottom that fit into a receptacle which is welded to the inside of the fender well.

If you do a search of gallery under user bugcollections you will find several seat pictures which I have taken when restoring some of these seats. These pictures may help you out.

I have a set of walk through front seats as removed from my 65 SO-42 that were restored and recovered in grey by a professional upholtsterer. They are correct in terms of color and fabric for a 64 Westy or Kombi. They are also perfect for any 65-67 walkthrough except the upholstery is not correct. They should be salt and pepper for 65-67.

I just sold a set of these with some funky 70ish upholstery for $350. I have not advertised the other set yet but had planned to. The price will be $450 for the pair and they are perfect mechanically and upholstery wise if you can live with the grey commercial upholstery.

Hope some of this helps. And if you are interested in the seats let me know.

I know the price sounds high. But the problem is that the driver's seat is worth probably max $150 because they are easy to find. The passenger seat is a $300 + seat and is simply almost impossible to find. Believe me, I have looked before.

Walk-thru seat thread with some photos:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=411963

Basic breakdown:
1958 - May, 1961 is a wide driver's seat where you don't really sit behind the steering wheel
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

May, 1961 - 1962 is the same seating position as 63-67 where the driver's seat is moved over to be behind the wheel and not as wide as the earlier seats. For this seat the backs are short, level with the metal front seat dividers:

This change was made partway through the 1961 model year:

It also uses a special seat slider:

The passenger side bottom just slips into the little holders on the seat stand - you can see those on your Bus or in the 1962 photo above.

The passenger side back rest has 2 little hooks that hook into the metal as seen above where I am lifting it up to un-hook it.

Well, at least I have 1 hook.
I have no idea how to fab another one for the other side.
Any ideas?
With the soaring prices & rarity of the passenger walk-thru seat I would love to repair this.

Thanks in advance,

Here's what came in my 67 W/T. I hope its the correct base. It fits in the grooves fine But,,, I posed this Q before without much response. Note the gap where the rear base meets the lower seat back. Is this normal?

I don't think so - my walk-thru back you have to shove down against the bottom to get it all the way seated.

My '63 is like Everett is describing, so is Deathbus's '65.

on my seat at top of page a hook was fashioned using a long 6MM bolt (10MM head) to replace a missing hook. bent at 90 degrees to match other hook. i forgot to weld it before i recovered the seats. can't tell unless you remove the seat back.

progressive refinements is wrong there. I have seen a couple august 1961 ('62 model year) deluxe buses with the old style non-adjuster drivers seat. both absolutely original unmolested cars.

has anyone seen a pre-September 1961 adjustable drivers seat?

Funny, I thought about Isaac's bus when I read Everett's post. Wondered how long it'd take Lind to pipe up.

There are places in PR and the parts list where the changes are off from what actually happened. Not very many, but someone who reads the VW books will have noticed.

Often the change might be more off in a model that takes longer to assemble, like a deluxe. Not so much on a plain jane kombi or panel.
If a deluxe and a panel roll off the line at the same time, the deluxe started earlier. It might have started before a change and have some parts that seemed odd for the time it rolled off the line.
Also, some changes were made intermittantly.

In many/most places the VINs when the changes took place in PR and the Parts List are slightly different.
So if your bus is 5 before the parts list change, it may be 23 after the PR listed change.
Still, I would trust the PR or Parts Lists much more than Other Than VW sources.

back to your regular scheduled program of another thread on front seats for a '63-'67 bus...

I had a swivel seat 61 panel that had a 1960 build date. The swivel seat was also adjustable.

I bought another w/t seat out of a 65 or 66 and swapped out the bottom portion, gap is much less noticeable. If covering is removed from both seat bottoms I may be able to figure out the gap but it does not effect seat comfort at all. If I find something inaresting I will post back.

This is a not so good photo of my 63/WT. i just noticed in the photo that the drivers seat seems to be taller than the Pass. side. Wolfsburg West covers that I think they are actually TMI covers, they fit very nice.

So what year seat frames are interchangable for the late '60's walk-thru split windows? Specifically a 1966.

Anything from the Bay/Vanagon era fit?

No later seats fit. I have walkthrough seats from a 64 in my 65. When I compared them to a friends 67 they looked identical.
