|
|
Here's my first post on samba. I'm in the process of buying an 86 syncro from a lady on Ebay. Trouble was I never got to inspect before I bought it. Now she's very generously offered to deliver it to me in Renton, Wa (from PDX).
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...OTORS:1123
Anybody in portland check this van out while it was up for sale? What did you think?
About me...I'm a life long motorhead, played with of Subarus (still have two), MGs, Jags, Triumphs (still have my 65 herald) and I grew up with Vanagons. Excited to get one of my own. Very interested in doing the Subaru conversion.
Thanks for any information you can provide! |

Not sure if you understand how eBay works but if you won it, you own it and are expected to pay for it.
Its not Craig's List where you tire kick the crap out of everything and back out at the last minute.
Please honor your bid and pay for the van.
These questions should have been asked before submitting your bid. |

$3,500 for a beater syncro-probably okay either way. Get ready to fork over a lot more cash to make it nice. Change to fuel lines. _________________ 93 EVMV

$3.5k is a great deal on a syncro.
Course, most of what makes a syncro (more awesome than a vanagon ) needs to be inspected, most importantly the drive-line.
The owner (who doesn't sound very techie) said the diff-locks work, so that's nice. But you gotta go check out the rust, lockers, VC, CV's and all the other things that make a syncro kick ass.
In looking at the mileage report, it racked up a ton of of the miles up to 2002 and then sat around getting nothing for years. _________________ == My Rides ==

Like insyncro said, you already bought the van.
Have it inspected by a knowledgeable vanagon mechanic to see what parts need immediate attention. It doesn't look like a bad van for the price.
If you need help along the way with repairs/upgrades you know where we are.

Considering the buyer has extensive feedback (510 feedbacks) on eBay, I think he's aware that he has already committed to the purchase.
Sounds like now he's just wondering if we think he got a decent deal. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

I saw that one on there, but I thought the pics were suspiciously vague, and no mention of rust. It could be a great deal though!
In any case let us know how it turns out. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Depends on rust, drivetrain condition, motor condition, does the VC work, vibration issues, cooling system up to snuff, electrical gremlins, overall brake condition etc...etc...etc.
A professional vanagon mechanic could tell these things from a thorough inspection, but I can't from the ebay listing.

Maybe someone in the PDX area has some constructive input?

Hi I'm new around here, but I thought I'd chime in on this one, since I just had an ebay Motors experience.
Bids and won auctions for vehicles on Ebay, are non-binding, and the buyer is not obligated to purchase the vehicle.
Here's a site on ebay that explains the policy:

I think you most likely got a very good deal. I think syncros are getting to the point where they are reaching their final owners, or final owner's families. What I mean is that they are sought after, and once found probably aren't going to be turned over, again, just passed on to the next generation. Less and less will be for sale as time goes on.
The only bad thing, imo, would be if it had a rust problem. The mechanical can be fixed...pricey, but fixed. I second SD saying to take it to a VANAGON mechanic.
I bought a rustless syncro w/locker a couple years ago for $3500 sight unseen from Seattle, had it auto transported to Monterey, CA. ($400). I took it to Van Cafe, had them go through it. It didn't need anything and I had a decoupler put in. Since then Van Cafe replaced the engine with a good, low milage (79K) 2.1...I didn't trust the one that came with it and I wanted reliability. Your rebuild may last another 50K, or so. I have about $8-9K into mine total...including purchase...and still think I got a good deal.
It will cost, for sure, to get it in good shape, but it will be worth it. _________________ '85 GL w/2.1L "The Tardis"

Thanks for the replies.
The last syncro I saw sell on CL in Seattle went for over $7k with a EJ22 conversion. I was getting head out the door to check it out and the owner told me he'd just sold it.
This one seemed like a nice deal, just been tough to get information out of the seller, though she did say several people have been out to check it out. From what she says it sounds like a good one. |

I find the presentation of this for sale extremely vague but perhaps the price is good. It's good that you are a wrencher and know your way around. All good advice prior. Its just the vagueness that bothers me. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I don't understand the purpose of the poll....you bought it...it is being delivered...what difference does it make if anyone thinks you got a good or bad deal?
Sounds like you might be having buyers remorse and are looking for reassurance; "See honey, don't be mad at me, the folks on TheSamba think it is a good deal." _________________ And then there were two...downsized to 83 Doka &

Ya, maybe you should spend $16k into a diesel conversion and still not have it run? _________________ '89 Westy - EJ25/22 Frank 4.44 5mt

now don't go off topic. That's an entirely different topic. Be nice, he sounds young and a newbie who is handy with a wrench. My point was it was not written up like a sale. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Yeah, your'e mostly right. I don't really know these vehicles that well and kinda jumped into it. I was pretty suprised when I won the auction.
It's not being delivered anymore, now I have to go pick it up. I did talk to her mechanic today and he said it's main fault is that it doesn't get driven very much, can't think that the van has any cancer and no rust came to mind.
I've always wanted my own syncro. Hope it's a fun one.
Thanks! |

I have owned quite a few old german vehicles, mostly VW but also BMW. Everytime I have not given regular use to those krout cars, shit starts happening. Especially the hydraulic stuff, but also anything where the grease could dry up. I would rather have higher miles and regular use than low miles and no use. I swear sometimes it could be as little as two months without driving one, then suddenly little mechanical issues start happening.
Regardless, I think you did quite well with your purchase! Hell the tranny and running gear is worth what you paid! _________________ '89 Westy - EJ25/22 Frank 4.44 5mt

How come the vehicle history report shows three owners when she claims to be the original owner. |
