I think your site is the sticky Ben! I have been using it for two years now as a reference. I had pictures printed for the intake/fuel line rebuild. I used it for the driveline work. It's like the Wikipedia for Westy's!

Thanks for everything!

I miss NS... such a nice place.

Me too Benny.
I can't believe it's been 10+ years since I've been able to get up there.
Soon... maybe I'll get there again.

I have also used your website as a reference for several projects on my Westy. The abundance of pictures makes it easier for an old mind to understand!
Thank You again for all that you do for the preservation of this vehicle and to help out folks who own them.

I would replace the positive battery cable and install a hard start relay and headlight relays.

1. replace the fuel lines - use the right type of clamps

2. Tail pipe: Grey=OK, sooty/oily/greasy??

3. replacing all the rubber brake hoses every 16-20 years is an important safety matter.

4. Check for rust under mat at front seat belt anchor points (remove 17mm bolt to check).

5. Check rear belt anchor points over wheel well. (Both are very common--and hidden--rust spots)

6. Inspect/replace the seals for the hook-ups on the side

Engine Compartment:
1. Check oil cap and dipstick for signs of water. (Oil off-color, brown/grey/white or bubbly)

2. Compression test: (disconnect coil, remove ALL plugs)

3. Spark Plug condition? (OK? Burnt? Oily? Sooty?)

Underneath:
1. Axle beam lubrication points in good shape? Residual grease still there?

2. Axle beam has excess grease showing at both ends of beam (kept greased)?

3. Check for rust on axle beam (screwdriver). Joint with steering box OK?

4. End plates, connection to body OK? Rust apparent anywhere else on beam?

5. Fuel pump not secure – redo the strap.

6. check for leaks at the power steering rack; boot deterioration??

7. steering damper in place? - inspect steering rack boots

8. check for coolant leaks at the rear heater core (with a running engine - sniff for sweet smell of coolant)

9. Condition of engine or trans. grounding cable?

10. Constant velocity joint boots?

11. shocks & struts damp/oil leaks??

12. check the fuel tank for leaks

13. Ball joint boots intact (upper & lower, check carefully)?

14. Tie rods straight? Tie rod end boots intact?

15. Check for fluid leaks after shutdown. (Oil, Trans, Fuel, Differential)

16. replace radiator pressure cap

I noticed this in Ben's original post. I don't believe that I've ever seen this suggested before. What does this fix or prevent from happening? Is there a related thread for this mod? What does it disable?

I absolutely trust Ben's judgement, I just want to know exactly what I'm doing and why.

This is an excellent thread, by the way. Thanks, Ben. You've helped me a ton throughout my Vanagon adventures.

Nothing special hose-wise?? You know, how the oil tower hose needs to be able to withstand the oil fumes and such....

This is what is prescribed. It's nearly impossible to find at a FLAPS.

http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_831_133/3.5mm_vacuum_line_sold_by_meter.html

I'm currently using it with good success. One meter would replace all of the vacuum line and give you some spare to take with you. Cheap insurance.

Anybody have an answer on that automatic shifter question?

Ok, lately, no, over the year I have seen so many friend and customers left stranded over a stupid ignition switch or.... a dead contact switch, the automatic van have the ignition going into the SHIFT (DR12) system, basically if your not on DRIVE or NEUTRAL the van won't start. That contact switch is a safety switch embedded into the automatic shifter, of course, over the year thew small metal piece that make the "CONNECTION" is wormed out so it make a bad start connection.

That part can be bought... so you don't have many possibilities here. Bypass this one. Simply connect the to big red wire together.

Ben
