there are threads on removing the rear heater entirely and on installing a bypass

similarly, a search on neutral safety switch auto trans will pull up a thread with pics

successful searchers could post the links here & we would eventually have a nice long term maintenance thread all laid out

Ben, you could put together a BENI'S BOOK and publishing it, ever thought about it. You already have so much of it online. I'd think about it seriously. Not to be confused with a Bentley it could be BRIGHT RED! Seriously. THANKS

Ben you definitely know your $#!T, and I agree with Daizee. Look into putting a book together, either by yourself or may be one through the samba. May be The Samba should look at putting out a series of books on VW's. There is a wealth of knowledge in here.
Ben thanks for the time you have spent putting all the info on line that you have. I know that I have benefited from it and I have only just started the long repair list on my 88 camper.

Thanks Very Happy

Merci Ben. Grand morceau de travail.

Ok, I have probably already embarassed myself with that little bit of the mother language. My Acadian grandparents are probably rolling over in their graves.

Nice job. Will be referenced often, by many, for a long time to come.

One of the nicest post I have read in years.

Even me, I'm not sure how it goes in French Smile

Big piece of work = what you just said, it can't be translated that easily.

Let me think!

Beau travail would be more... adequate.

Beau mean beautiful, travail mean work.

beautiful work. against nice.... mmmmm

I'm partially Acadian too. Part English, part French, German and Indian.

What a mix.

I'm proud of this thread, I'm so happy that it help a few.

An e-mail I just received tonight:

""""" Funny, years ago I mailed you when I needed a little help with my swap from a 1.9 to 2.1 That engine has taken me all the way to the Arctic ocean and back...I think you are my good luck charm Smile"""""

Yep, those one make me feel really good, there is some nice folks on this planet.

Regards.

Ouffffff, I just read my original post.... It doesn't make sense to invest so much on a stock engine. Get a Subi 2.2L for 300-400$ and you will have peace of mind for years to some.

Ok, I will share how conversion are done step by step in a new thread soon.
If I loose job... so be it.

Ben

Keep in mind the neutral switch is also a safety device, if u or someone else forgets and leaves in drive and it's started, eng tends to rev at start, things will get interesting real fast.

I think this is a great idea too! I would gladly pay $40 for an extra DIY book for the Vanagon. Big bright color photos. Simple A,B,C steps.
I am also seeing a DIY youtube video program!

Wow, what a great thread, THANKS BEN!
And the rest also!

Ben, how serious are you about this:

I would like to have peace of mind for years to come. I haven't yet invested much $ in my great-sounding 2.1 Waterboxer (a rebuilt from Canada with unknown mileage), but I'm ready to order a tencent exhaust, and will begin doing other things from your list. Should I stop now, before I waste money trying to build confidence for long travel trips into this engine?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Has anyone priced out what all that costs in Labour hours and parts? Will add that into my budget. Having owned a 20yo and 12yo car, I get how it works and the chain reaction that occurs when one simple thing breaks...If it's way too much money the first year, is the order listed the best order to get it done, or fuel, cooling and brake lines this year and the rest next year?

And, I'm big on spend now or pay in towing, take your pick...

THANKS!

ben i dont know you personally but i would like to voice my appreciation and thanks for your work and time on this tread, and others, and your web site. i have used them to diy my van and thanks to your efforts i still have a working van. the information you have assembled over the years should be put in a formal document or permanent sticky. video, pic, threads, etc. you should hire someone to collect all the information and work with the samba to publish. maybe even contact bently to integrate into their work. heaven knows they need some help especially their wiring diagrams and vehicle pics, and assembly drawings.
