Would any of you buy a Beetle with a rod nocking? I found one for $600 and some bucks, but it has a rod nocking.

mechanicals are easy to fix. focus your inspection on the body and rust.

Absolutely would!

As mentioned, if the body is good, the rest is easy. My last purchase was totally seized but the price was CHEAP!! I had a complete 1600 on the shelf, built it up and I'm rolling for a very minimal investment.

Rods are often just a bad bearing. Depending how long it has run it may be ok to just slip in some new ones. in extreme cases it will need crank gound or replaced and new rods.
If you do rebuild, put on a new oil cooler for the existing one is most likely full of debris.

Like the previous posters said - not only yeah - but hell yeah - check for rust - especially under the battery and the heater channels. If the pan is good (and original) chances are the the heater channels are good too.

I found my 72 SB in a small town in Eastern Washington which has a high desert climate - very warm summers (hot!) and very cold winters - and is dry. The SB had been sitting in a garage for 15 years. The tires were nearly rotted off but there is virtually no rust inside or out - the pan is original - even under the battery box there was very little rust - just some surface rust. I got a 65 40hp motor intact and a disassembled AE motor with many parts missing - and an AE motor in the car that turned - and actually ran once I got to tinkering with it. $500! These deals are out there and you never know where you might find them. Mine was advertised on CraigsList over and over. I was looking for a Ghia but ended up with a SB.

I'll find my Ghia.

Don't let rust scare you unless you pull the carpets back and can see the ground. At some point with bad rust you have to calculate whether the deal is worth it.

Heard the lates nock nock joke yet?

Oh hells yes I would, if the car is decent. I bought my buggy without an engine, but I had one already built up on the shelf.

If you use Firefox and mis-spell a word, it will red underline it. Then right click for the correct spelling and other possible words too.

Yeah! I've seen another that doesn't run. Not sure if it's locked up or what. Just always thought that if a rod was knocking or it was locked up...it's a lost cause, guess I'm wrong!

Knock Knock.. Who's there?... Iva... Iva who?... Iva Rod Kanocking will you still buy me? Hell ya the price is right and anything is worth trying to save. You buy it anf fix it and it will give you all the love you can handle as long as you own it. Or you could just do what some people do and fix it and turn it for a profit.
