I bought this car from a Samba seller in CT right around Thanksgiving of 2010, and have been having a lot of fun freshening up its appearance over the cold winter months since then, with the eye toward some vintage fahrvergnugen once the nice weather returns.
I would like to start a thread to show some of the stuff that's been accomplished, and will try to update periodically as I am able.
I've had a great mentor on the paint re-invigoration in particular, namely samba member "moogie32" who is doing a positively amazing job on her '63 Ghia, ref: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7...;start=600
Having been a Savannah Beige '68 Beetle Sedan driver for many years, I was so pleased to "fall into" this very nice Savannah Beige '70!
It came originally from Redwood City, CA, sold new by Neufeld Motors. It was the seller's great aunt's car, so I'm "sort of" like the second owner!
Here it is at the seller's house the very first day I saw it in person, Saturday, November 20th, 2010 (I'm sorry, but, for whatever reason, I had to convert my photos to gif's for the system to accept them--if I can somehow figure out how to upload conventional jpg's again, I'll definitely do so...):
(EDIT: I was able to upload a proper jpg of this picture from another computer, so I've gone and replaced the gif--the jpg does look smoother) _________________ Stock Steve

Looks good from the back
I have always liked the over-riders on the bumpers. _________________ '71 Super 'Vert

I had flat-towed the '70 home behind my green '96 Passat wagon. Though I had insurance on the car, I did not have a legal CT plate on it yet. I had bolted on one of my "OLDIE" CT vanity EA plates onto the car, to try to make myself look as kosher as possible on the road.
I also had a "CAR IN TOW" placard in the back window, plus a set of magnetic lights stuck onto the rear bumper. In all, we got home w/o hassle, thankfullly!
According to my records, all of these photos below are dated November 25th, 2010, which I believe was the day before Thanksgiving...
A diamond-in-the-rough:
Seems to like sitting next to my '60 Sunroof Bug in the garage:
And amazingly enough, I got home early enough that day, that I was able to run to the local DMV with my bill of sale, and insurance certificate, and get some actual legal plates for the car:

It's Yukon Yellow, and most of it is still packed away in boxes ... waiting to be put back together. The body is back from paint, I just need to find the time and funds to finish building it. You can see it in the background of this pic.

Yukon Yellow's the absolute best convertible color ever. |
I couldn't agree more...

Moving on now to starting up some initial work toward freshening up the dull-looking paint. The dates of these photos below are Saturday, November 27th and Sunday, November 28th, 2010 (the weekend after Thanksgiving).
But first, we had to see what it looked like with the top down (and with poodle accessory)!
Mrs. Stock Steve (a.k.a. moogie32) had some ideas in mind about how to go about it. She showed me what do do by working on the trunk lid first. We popped off the chrome trim strip and trunk lid handle. She wet-sanded first with 1500 grit paper (on a soft sanding block), then rinsed, then wet-sanded with 2000 grit. Then rinse and dry.
Next step was rubbing compound on a wool bonnet attached to a 7" power polisher/sander, then buff clean.
Next step was polishing compound on another clean wool bonnet, on the same polisher, then buff clean.
Final step is a coat of regular carnuba wax, and final buff.
Here is the trunk lid done:
There is a visible difference in shine between the finished trunk lid, and the fender & quarter panel, which have not been done yet:
Getting ready to attack the left front fender and left front quarter panel. That's Mrs. Stock Steve helping remove original fender beading:
And front fender & quarter panel finally done (no fender beading in place yet), as of Sunday afternoon, November 28th:

Thanks guys. I will try to go find the containers of the rubbing compound and the polishing compound, and provide the names of what they specifically are. They came from an automobile paint & body supply store in New Haven, CT ("Paint World," on Ella Grasso Boulevard), and are in a liquid form--you shake up the bottle and squirt some of the stuff onto the wool bonnet, and then go to work.
I just had to buy a new wool bonnet recently too, since one of the ones I was using (don't intermix the rubbing cpd bonnet with the polishing cpd bonnet-keep one dedicated bonnet for each of those two polishing mixtures) sort of disintegrated near the end, and I was able to find a nice quality, tie-on style, wool one at an online store called, I think, "Prevette's."
Anyway, lots more details that I want to include here along the way. Here is a sneak peak for where I am *currently* with the car--see the 4/10/2011 updates section near the top of the "Shoreline Antique Auto Connection" main page:
http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/SAACMainPage.html
Thanks again and Happy Volkswagening,

Had to add these couple of photos, taken by our old VW friend Greg, from when he and fellow old VW friend Bill, dropped by our garage on Saturday afternoon, November 27th, 2010, to check out the New Arrival (thanks again Greg for the cool shots!):
Can you show us how that top goes down?:
Yeah, the guy holding the beer in the background--that's me! And our smooth collie Angelo is poking his head in at the lower left. And that's Mrs. Stock Steve and Bill toward the right side of the shot. Looks like we still had the trunk handle removed at that point:

Just a couple more "boring" items I wanted to document along the way here for now:
Both of these were located behind the spare tire. I took both of these pictures on December 1, 2010.
First the color sticker (normally hidden also by the washer bottle):
And then a data plate, with part of the VIN stamped in after "150" (in case it's not readable, the car's full VIN is 1502105754--and from browsing www.typ15.com it appears maybe a September or October 1969 production date?):

When I purchased the '70, the seller made it clear that it needed a new generator. I elected to bring the car to Cardone & Daughter Automotive, in Westbrook, CT (http://www.cardoneanddaughter.com/), as I knew that even though they are a "general" old car specialized repair and restoration company, they also had some righteous VW credentials (not to mention owning at least two of their own old VWs). Check out this shot of the front of their shop from 2009 (the two tone green & white Super Beetle at the far left is company owner David Cardone's--the others may be customer cars--this photo came courtesy Mr. Cardone):
And more recently, in March of 2011, David's wife Nancy sent along this great posed shot of David and herself, with their new project '57, inside the garages of Cardone & Daughter Automotive:
I was not able to get over to Cardone's with my car during the day, but did end up flat-towing it over on the evening of December 6, 2010, and snapped a couple of nighttime photos, right after I unhooked it.
I used the "after hours drop box" to desposit my key & service request (and had also spoken with Mr. Cardone earlier in the day, so that he knew the car was coming, and what it needed).
I should note that I decided to suspend the "paint restoration" activities for the time being and get the nitty-gritty generator replacement done first, since obviously the car needs a working generator to be usable. Not to worry, though, as I will pick up with more coverage of paint stuff in later installments...
I am happy to say that the car came home from Cardone & Daughter Automotive a short time later and with a fully functioning generator. Cardone & Daughter did a great job with my car and I recommend them highly! They are located at 177 Boston Post Road, Westbrook, CT 06498, telephone: 860-664-0727, web site: http://www.cardoneanddaughter.com/ _________________ Stock Steve
