You should DEFINITELY try a different tire shop, the ones who balanced your problematic radials are not doing it right. When you balance wheels you put the weights on the rear of the rim exactly opposite of where the ones on the front side would go, this is especially important when you have the need for a whole lot of those ugly lead weights.
Ask them if they do that, if they don't then walk out and head to the next shop.
EDIT: ok, false alarm, i saw your update on creeky bug thread that you found a tire place that does the rear side balancing. |

December Buggin' in Connecticut?!... Fairly unusual occurrence, but the roads were clear and dry, and the '70 Bug needed to be exercised. This was after a little local run in my town, Branford, CT, on Saturday, December 10th, 2016. Finally put the Porsche 914 hubcaps on (just like VW, but no logos) the 5.5" refinished 914 wheels, and with 185/65R15 redlines. Happy Holidays!

Stock Steve. Nice. Do you have any side shots with the redlines? I would like to see a couple if you can share. I have been entertaining the redlines. Thanks. |

I took a few other pictures that day, S0031, as I had driven the car to an event, so I'll do my best to get a few others posted--not sure if they will provide you with what you're looking for, but I'll get 'em done next chance I get.
Here's a photo from earlier in the year, before I decided to pop on the hubcaps:
And earlier, before I put them on the car:
Anyway, that's all I have for now. Will attempt uploading a couple more next chance I get... _________________ Stock Steve

To follow up on a recent inquiry by S0031, here are a couple more shots from Saturday, December 10th, 2016, when I drove the Bug over to the center of Branford, CT, to drop off some new, unwrapped toys at a Christmas toys donation event called "The Christmas Caddy," featuring, of course, a flashy red decorated Caddy. It was a chilly but clear day, and the local high school had some carolers out as well, adding to the festive spirit of the day. When viewing, don't forget to keep in mind that those tires are mounted on refinished 5.5" wide *original* Porsche 914 "hubcap" wheels; the *Porsche-specific* offset keeps them tucked in nicely (Full Disclosure: There is just the *tiniest bit* of front tire rubbing at full-extreme-lock, which you mostly never use, except when maybe maneuvering into a tight parking spot at super-low speed).

Some nice Sunday afternoon old-VW pleasure driving in Southern Connecticut, Sunday, February 26, 2017...
It was nice to have some clear roads (thanks to an overnight rain shower that hopefully washed off all of the SALT that our local towns love to spread) for a little local driving with the '70 Bug, around the Connecticut Shoreine towns of Branford and Guilford. This picture shows us getting some gas at "Trav's Mobil" on Route 1 in Guilford...

I forgot to mention that the day before the '70 went to Cardone's for repairs, we used it as the setting for our 2010 family Christmas card session, with two kids and four dogs... (there always has to be an old VW in there, of course)...
The date of these photos was Sunday, December 5th, 2010...
Here's how you get *everyone's* attention for a photo (ha ha):

Oh my gosh what an amazing pic with the collies! I used to have small shelties and this brought back memories. Gorgeous. Good stuff on the 70 vert too, I am restoring one now actually. _________________ My restos www.classicvwbugs.com

Sold the Creeky Bug, but kept the set of knobbies that I put together for it a short time ago. These are the China-repro "Pre-A" wheels, 16"x3.25", and the tires are some super-knobby "Deka" brand tires that Coker sells, that require tubes. I forget the size designation right now--will try to come back and note it. And four-to-five adapters too, of course. No rubbing, but I still think I may put some KYB gas-charged shocks on the back, just to correct that tiny bit of rear end sag. Anyway, fun stuff!

More wheel & tire fun lately...
First, CIP-1's China repro 5.5" wide 5-bolt wheels, utilizing adapters. Tires are 195/60R15 Goodriches:
And then (since the clips were crap on the 5-bolt wheels and I wanted to break them down and re-do them), trying out CIP-1's China-repro 4-bolt 5.5" smoothie wheels. You can purchase them in this right red finish, which is what I did (I think white and silver are also choices). Tires are 195/60R15 Goodich's (same ones that were on the 5-bolt wheels in the picture above). I had some chrome center bullets on my shelf, and also some chromed plastic lug bolt head covers. Not quite visible are some chrome bullet valve caps also. Might want to try some radial whitewalls with these wheels some time...

The date was this past Saturday, November 14th, 2020--a nice clear & mild day in Connecticut. Got a couple of old VWs (my '70 Convertible, with our puppy riding along with me, and Moogie32's '63 Ghia), plus a first-gen Miata (belonging to Moogie32's sister), out to Branford Town Hall, in Branford, CT, to hand in our donation to The Christmas Caddy (https://www.facebook.com/christmascaddy), to help brighten kids' and families' Christmas once again this year.

Thanks Lost! Have been thinking about adding some of those skinny "hot rodder style" trim rings (the kind that kind of sit "inside" the outer part of the rim, and show a little bit of rim at the outer edge), but I think I'd be getting a little bit too close to too much bling. Perhaps if I didn't have white letter tires. So, I think I'll leave well enough alone on these! Thanks again! _________________ Stock Steve

Great. Not too big of a fan of the red rims but hey if you like it then that’s what counts. |
