look what the mailman brought me today- a 1961 only air conditioner unit I got from wagenwerks in washington. I got it painted to match my dash, cleaned up the chrome vents, and modified ivory knobs to fit the switches instead of the black ones that are original. I got it test fitted up to my 58 convertible and I like it so much better than the later style unit. it looks perfectly period and at home in my 58. this unit was the first unit sold by volkswagen dealers beginning in 1961, they switched to the other style in 1962. I love the look of the 2 little rocket ship like vents- they scream 50's bling, and the shape of this a/c case suits the dash much better- clean and simple just like the early beetle dash!

Does Wagenwerks sell the under dash piece separately? Do you mind if I ask how much? It looks very good by the way.

Those defroster add ons in the corner of each windshield look pretty neat! Did you make those?

Nice looking AC unit as well! Is it 6 volt like factory or did they just keep the housing and change the internals?

wagenwerks just had this one air conditioner, ive had a want ad up for 2 years for this unit.i dont wanna say what I paid for it, lets just say plenty!!Smile vw offered this specific model thru dealers only in 1961 with 2 rocket ship look round vents, then they went to a different style for 62-67 witha boxyier case, 2 slatted round vents and a slatted rectangular vent as here:

thank you Chris! This is not a reproduction, its a real 1961 only air conditioner made by Delanair and sold thru VW dealers. it will remain 6 v, all the internals (fan switch, thermostat, evaporator coil, relay, 6v cage fan and wiring harness) are remaining stock, my car is staying 6 volt, and the system will be charged with the old school ice cold R-12 (hard to find but i got some).
newer systems are charged with R-134 which is being phased out for an even newer refrigerant!

as for the defroster vent add on, they are an old school accessory. i forget the manufacturer. they have a little tube in them that can be rotated to closed, or opened to aim at the vent windows to defrost them so you can see your side view mirrors. which there was some way to connect my a/c behind the dash to these vents for quick defroster, but i think i already have enough bells and whistles.

I have a Stewart Warner complete for sale if you want it bill. The "blue oxymoron" as you call it already has a pre B2 Eberspacher heater - model 8542. It's all tuned and will cook me out- adjusted to shut off at cool down cycle at exactly 2:45 as spec'd . Just got templates from a nice samba member named Aiden and did the install. So no room for a stewart Warner- I think they look like an ugly Frankenstein unit anyways. I have about 5 correct screw terminal ignition switches and the one in my dash is keyed to match the door handle, trunk lock, glovebox lock and decklid- I should make it 2 keys ( 1 for door and ignition, 1 for trunk, decklid, glovebox so I can valet park it- lol)

As for the Saxomat, I bought a second NOS flywheel (saving in case I decide to go to 1600cc case based engine at a later date or as a spare) and had the used one I have machined to 36hp specs at crank side- clearanced, cut deeper and dowel pin pattern cut at 90 degrees to 40hp pins- then rotary balanced crank and complete Saxomat assembly as a complete unit. Crank is back in and I have long block all back together. I just need to find an appropriate flywheel seal as I can't use 36hp or 40hp stock seals- have a local flaps guy
Looking for me.

got room in your bus for a stewart Warner ? After all it would keep you warm when camping- hook it up to a timer to kick on every 30 minutes or so

We are trying to finalize our prototype that will be more Plug n' Play that should take a couple of hours to install without the need of all the hoses, pumps, belts, and complicated wiring.

A single self contained unit that will fit under the hood but will require a powerful alternator... It's been a 4 year project and I hope to introduce it soon.

Stay tuned....

Hello,

A car I have listed for a client has this system. It's actually the first time I've ever seen such a thing. Interesting for sure!

Here's the car.

I just picked up one of these 62 - 67 style units! The round vents aren't too great. Is there a source for replacements that anyone knows of?
