Does this picture show the proper orientation of a 3 arm yoke for use on a 2.0 L?

I'm asking because I need to drill a hole in mine for the locking pin.

you will want to drill four holes because there will be times you flip it over while building. For example - I like to set the cylinders straight down then after the head is on flip it over. Same when installing rocker arms.

Thanks SGKENT!

I knew you would reply with your insightful wisdom.

By four holes do you mean two matching pairs? If so, got any tips on making the holes line up. For example, did you drill with the yoke in the stand?

There are several ways but I simply put it in all the way, aligned it and then center punched where I wanted the holes. You can use a level if you are a perfectionist. On mine, and I suspect yours, there are buttons of welding on it that have to be ground to fit the yoke of the engine stand. If you don't have a stand yet I suggest the heaviest you can find as a fully dressed late T4 engine with exhaust and flywheel will take a cherry picker to move it. We found a used one-time engine stand locally for $50 and it works outstanding but the legs are too wide for my cherry picker so I have to monkey with things to make it work. Maybe someday I will change the leg design on the cherry picker so the engine stand will fit between it or the stand so it can go under it. The yoke is pretty good steel so keep it oiled or greased while drilling or the drill will dull.

Cheers, Mike

Sent you a PM. Mine is like this but I use the VW yoke and keep the other yoke off it in case I ever need to build a V8 etc again. There are many styles but I prefer something more robust than the tricycle kind.

OK, so it is just a standard stand with a removable yoke - good to know - thanks!

This is the one that I have (1,000 lb capacity). And you are correct, you simply slide out the yoke that it comes with and slide the VW yoke in.

I've never used an engine stand, so excuse the dumb question.
Is the special yoke necessary, or just nice for VW engine work? Is there some reason the yoke that comes with these stands won't work?

The standard yoke is very difficult to fit to the VW's bellhousing flange and binds on the flywheel.

Okay, my new stand and yoke are in the garage. I have to drill holes in the yoke still. Question: are you supposed to use the regular bolts/studs on the engine to mate it with the yoke, or fit something longer?

FYI,

A nice feature of the engine stand shown by SGKent, is that you can put a lifting table under it to safely lift and lower a fully assembled engine by your self (the table can roll in and out in-between the stands legs with engine on it…:0)

Yeah, that's the one I got.

What to make of this? When the yoke is fit flat against the case, the lower hole doesn't line up. Even with maximum compensation via the 'slop' in the upper bolt, it's not enough to get a bolt straight through.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I suppose I'll need to have the lower hole on the yoke embiggened, but at what point is that slice of metal inboard of the hole going to be too thin?

It's a perfectly cromulent word.

I'll do that with the file, thanks. I have a tendency to overthink things.

As asked above, What do folks use to mount their engines on these yokes? The standard bolts require some sort of sleeve in order to work. See the pic below:
