I thought there was a thread on this topic, but the above keywords oddly enuff brought up nothing...
I'm looking for a small metal box to keep a box of kitchen matches in -- my idea is to contain any fire if the vibration from driving causes them to self-ignite.
Anybody know of anything? maybe a stainless steel bento box that is rectangular and the right size? _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

out of curiosity, has anyone had this happen to them, or heard of this happening to anyone, simply from driving?
yes, i know there is a warning on the side of the match boxes. however, i have not heard of this happening, nor have i had this happen to me. i've had boxes of strike anywhere/kitchen matches, stored in a common ziploc bag, rattle around in my busses for thousands and thousands of miles and over the course of years, even to the point where the tips disintegrate and collect in a pile of dust in the bag, and i have never had any 'spontaneous combustion' from driving. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

This is a problem that doesn't need solving.
If you are really concerned, by safety matches vs strike anywheres. Even with a strike anywhere, try using 2 matches against each other to get an idea of hard hard they are to ignite. Now remember that they have been across the country and all around in delivery and distribution trucks.
Lastly, just by cigarette lighters. They are actually cheaper and you don't have to dispose of hot matches in wildfire sensitive area. I just carry a nice zippo in the kitchen drawer. And, you can use them one-handed... |

Buy a Zippo or a couple of cheap bic lighters. Store them in zip lock bag. |

I live in Orygun - already have lighters & etc.
Thank you, I do appreciate the likelihood of the risk - I also change my fuel & brake lines and wear seat belts to deal with other unlikely events.
I am looking for a metal box big enuff to hold an entire box of kitchen matches. _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Do a search on EBAY. Old tin match boxes can be found there. |

do you have a pic of these kitchen matches?
wow. how hard it is to measure what you want to put in and then look for a box that is slightly larger?
perhaps your question would be better asked here: http://www.matchsafe.org/ _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Perhaps wrapping the match box in asbestos, that way there is no possibility of fire. |

although i don't share your concern - our kitchen matches seem to be difficult to light the longer they stay in the westy - in the spirit of westy tinkering i'll give it a try at answering your question.
if you go to a gift store or even the gift/card section of a bigname discount retailer look for candle tins. some of the sample or travel collection ones come as little tea lights in a larger gift tin, and those strike me about the right size. you could also see if they have an old-fashioned metal 3x5 card box. that might be kinda big, but you could double up with a couple boxes of matches inside and glue some sandpaper along the outside for easy lighting.
let us know what you do/find. _________________ Julia

well, your assumption would be correct if the match companies only made one size of box. some people buy the boxes that are approximately 3" x 1.5" x .75", while others, like myself, buy the larger boxes that are approximately 3" x 7" x 2".
how do we know that you don't sneak down to the eagle rock lodge or the mckenzie river mountain resort to get your matches, and that they have specially sized boxes? perhaps you refill a vintage box with modern matches. are we to read your mind? nowhere in your query did you mention the size box you prefer.
next time you stumble into target or wally-world, look around for something that suits your size requirements.
why not take a road trip over to Eugene and get some hippie artisan to whip you up a vanagon shaped box that you access the inside by having a pop-top style opening? now that would be unique and kinda cool.
go to a fly fishing shop and look for a small fly box.
