I'm having problems with my clutch. 1957 oval with a newer transmission (it's not the original split case transmission) I recently replaced the original 3 finger pressure plate (180 mm)with a diaphram pressure plate, replaced the fork, clutch cable, and bowden tube. Now when I step on the pedal it goes into all gears with no problems, smooth as butter. Once I start to release the pedal it starts to grind/vibrate at at about halfway up on the release and it goes into gear. The vibration feels like its coming from the pedal and the noise is coming from the clutch.? Any ideas? The pressure plate did have a pin on it that stuck out a bit and I have to clearance the transmission to allow the engine to turn. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Sounds like you need more bend in the bowden tube. The extra friction it creates prevents the chatter when you release the clutch. _________________

It doesn't feel like chatter, it's actually makes noise like when you accidentally throw an automatic car into park/reverse before it slows down completely. I have a feeling that the pressure plate they sold me is wrong because I had to clearance the transmission in order for it to fit. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Well I think I found out what the problem is. I installed another pressure plate and had the same problems. It looks like the actual clutch disk is the issue. The back of the disk was rubbing the rivets on the inside of both pressure plates I used. Apparently if you change from a 3 finger to a diaphragm pressure plate you should also change the clutch so it matches the pressure plate you are using. There must be a dimensional difference between a diaphragm and a 3 finger clutch?! _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Interesting…because I did just the opposite, put my old three finger pressure plate back on using the disc from the diaphragm plate….I had noises…I thought it was bad TOB…maybe it’s the disk. Let me know what you think. |
