Posted: Sat Apr 09, 2011 2:46 pm Post subject: New Plenum and Intake tubes, cleaned injectors too! |
|
|
Took out the old Plenum and Intake tubes as well as the original Injectors and replaced them.
The new to me parts came out of a 1991 Vanagon and did they ever look new when compaired
to the original. The Plenum was pretty difficult to get out, 'cause I didn't have the correct
tool for the job. I couldn't get any of my sockets on the 17mm nut behind the Throtle Body.
I thought that a open or a box wrench would do the trick but no! Had to go and buy a 17mm
offset wrench to clear the Plenum once the TB was removed. The nut on the rear of the Plenum
is a 13mm and that was very easy to get too. I had read but not followed someones post about
what a PITA changing the Plenum is. I should have taken the advice as I will be taking it apart
tomorrow to correct one fault. The poster stated that you should work your way from left
to right and connect the left side intake first then the right. Ifirst bolted down the Plenum, then
the right and then left side intakes. One of the left side intake tubes' hose is not making a
good enough connection to the Plenum and causing a Vacuum leak. So I will take it apart
tomorrow and fix what I started. Some FYI's bolts to the intake tubes to the heads 13mm, injector
clamp bolt 10mm, bleeder screw for the fuel system 7mm.

Nice job.
I highly recommend replacing the plenum connector sleeves with silicone hose.
Kits are available in the classifieds or just buy bare pieces off eBay and get your own clamps.
Opps, I forgot to paint the fuel pressure regulator.
Shame on me. |

<channeling Ben; love ya buddy!>:
Yeah tell me about it men! You'll never know!!
This place needed a little prettying-up.
You can get 2' lengths of 2" ID (Proper size is 1 1/2” ) silicone tube at: http://www.siliconeintakes.com/index.php?cPath=6&osCsid=468d65bd1b6f26814f30a4545ab9c264
Use a fresh razor knife blade clamped to a table edge, and a block 2.25" as a stop to make clean straight cuts and make your own runner couplers.
The 2" (1 1/2” ) tube will seal nicely on the 2.1 runners making clamps optional, the 1.9 runners are slightly smaller so clamps are needed. #24 stainless clamps can be found at the home supply stores. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Eeee, purty. Even matched the wire ties to the intake color. I am humbled.
OK, extra points: did you all clean the inside of the runners as well as you did the outside? There's some awful heavy crud in a lot of them. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Does that yellow make it go faster like painting your front brake calipers red? _________________

Who cares if the inside is clean, if it's shiny it's good right? The yellow makes the car just as fast as lighted windshield washers. |

Why do it once correctly when you can do it three times! Took everything apart again this morning.
Then put it back together again but same if not worse result (vacuum leak) So, I got to take
it all apart again. Third times a charm I guess, it seems to be running fine!
Really like all the engine BLING you guys have shown-off! Don't think that my poor old Westy
power plant will ever look as good but that's ok.
Lesson learned is the the Plenum needs to be tightened LAST (well for mine anyways) so that
the Intake Tubes can be positioned and then tightened down. Otherwise they just may not
align correctly? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

If there's a reason to pull the engine I always clean and paint its bits. But it's just basic black for me:

I never thought I'd see the day where I would be correcting Chris on the message board, but it seems that the 2.1 runners actually require 1.625" (or 1 5/8") ID silicone hose. I bought a 2' length of 2" silicone hose from the link above, and the diameter is way too big. Got out the 'ol calipers on the runners, and they seem to be a perfect fit for the 1.625" hose that they offer. Just wanted to put it out there in case anyone else embarks on this project. I'm taking suggestions on what to do with the 2' of 2" silicone hose. Points given for creativity. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

I'm not submitting mine until you reveal what color silicone you have, as this thread has a serious style angle I want to capitalize on for the winning entry.

It's funny that you mention the color. I'm actually kind of glad that it doesn't fit. It's this ugly, pale red color that just doesn't jive with the dingy, rusty, utilitarian vibe I've got going in my engine bay. I think I'll go with basic black for the next order. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

Sorry, that was a careless mistype on my part.
But the size I prefer is 1.5" ID, that seals very tightly around the flared ends of the 2.1 runners. 1.625" ID would slip on easily but require clamps on 2.1 runners.
The 1.9 runners have straight ends and are slightly smaller OD than the 2.1's so 1.5" ID tubing slips on easily and fits close but requires clamps to assure a good air seal; on 2.1 runners clamps are optional with 1.5" ID tubing because the fit is very tight. I doubt one could fit 1.375" ID tubing on the 1.9 runners.
I like to stock one size to cover both applications.
I know you're feeling the same thing I'm thinking, though:" shoulda got out the calipers before I ordered anything". We all make mistakes, however well-intentioned we might be. Hope you can find some use for that 2" tubing. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
