Mine had Monroe gas magnum's on it when I bought it years ago, they were rusting and ugly. And are still on there (rusting and ugly) because they work fine. I'll replace the fronts fairly soon as I go thru the front end, but I'll get another set of Monroes. I think they only offer one model (and I haven't seen any with coils around them). Oversize pistons, lots of fluid- and built well. An American full-size truck shock.

I saved up for the Blistien's only to take them off after a month, way to soft for my van.

I think you had the touring, not HD's?

I knew little about shocks until last month when i reviewed the bilstien site. they invented the gas shock. the reason for the gas shock is because the valving in the liquid pistons would adgitate the oil so much that in two or more strokes, the oil would get cavutated and turn to foam, losing its suppressive value.
the black bilstiens are this way--the hd's arent. some koins are oil as well, and for the money, I want gas. It doesnt degrade or change with arduous use. so a washpan dirt road wont make your gas shocks useless. it does with the oil hydraulic shocks. this makes oil shocks worthless.
worthless.
even if you have to buy them one-at-a-time, do it. thery average 79.00 to 85.00 each. go to their site and see the demos.
there. now you know what I'm gonna get.[I have kybs which are an improvement over the worn out boges]

I had the HD's. It may have been the tall soft springs that my 85 has that was the problem.

I'm using ALKO shocks on both my vans. They ride very well - good control but no harshness - and are holding up well too.

Bus Depot has them at a reasonable price and also Frank Condelli.

I can not find those at http://www.busdepot.com

Can you point me?

Type ALKO in the part# search on the left side of the page ... just worked for me.

If you are on a budget, try the Gas Grande Fleet shocks from NAPA; PN 76970 and 76971.

All four out the door for $220.

Thanks for the tip! They are the same as Monroe Gas Magnums. Now we have more options for finding them at the best price.

Here is a knowledgeable, short link to their manufacturing pedigree-

They're here: http://www.busdepot.com/search.jsp For some reason they don't show up on the same page as all the rest of their Vanagon shock offerings...

I also tried the HD Bilsteins and found them too soft. I tried the Konis and found them too hard - the ALKOs are just right! Wink

I am running a set of the Monroe Gas Magnums now on my 85 Westy Weekender and they are considerably better than the blown out Boge's that were on there. That being said I wouldn't buy them again, not that they are bad but I know Bilstein's are better. I've had Bilstein HD's on a couple of my old GTI's, Jetta's & on my old e30 BMW. They are excellent! Save your pennies and buy the good stuff the first time!
