I graduated from school 6 months ago. I have a degree in Respiratory Care. After countless months and applications to just about every hospital in a 200 mile radius, I finally got an interview on Monday at a University hospital.
Anybody have any stories to share about a big interview you have had?
I would love to hear any tips and advise that would help me.
With so much competition in the job market today, i will take all the help i can get.

Thanks, Mike

Congratulations for your success in achieving your certification or license, since I don't know which one. I am sure that you have worked hard to get where you are. Your main job now is to sell yourself to your potential employer. The big mistake you don't want to make is to need the job so badly that you lie to the employer. If you don't know how to do certain parts of your job, mainly due to lack of exposure to that equipment, or something of that sort, it's not wrong to tell the employer that you don't have experience in that area. Having experience in everything, especially for a newcomer to the field, is a red flag that says, "This person is a know-it-all". You don't want that. I would rather hire a person who doesn't know everything but is agreeable and willing to learn than any person who knows everything.
Good luck with your interview, shake hands firmly before and after the interview and follow up with a written thank you within a day or so, and a phone call within a week or so.

I once applied for a job at a food distributor for a fork lift /warehouse job. I was sitting by the receptionist desk filling out my app along with 5-6 others. I noticed as people were turning in their apps the ones wearing suits were told to go through the door and have a seat and they would be interviewed. The people that were not wearing a suite the receptionist took their app and told them they would be in touch with them. I was not wearing a suite (remember this is for a warehouse job) and I was not interviewed or ever heard back from them.

Moral of the story, appearance and 1st impression is everything.

Turn your cell phone off so the damn thing won't start ringing during the interview. That can kill your chances of getting the gig.

Cover any tattoos, get a very conservative haircut, NEVER say "dude" or "like", Dress like you're going to your grandmothers church, make eye contact and be pleasant.

To add a tidbit to this, wear appropriate shoes. The interviewer will notice your shoes.

Watch for the left field question.

Some folks will ask something stupid like, "How do get an elephant into refrigerator?"

Do not answer with anything related to a blender. lol

I answered with, "I'd ask it very kindly to please get into the refrigerator." The interviewer liked the answer. Beats the hell out of my why, other than I didn't hesitate and get the deer in the headlights look. Balance Daniel-son. Balance.

Have rehearsed but comfortable answers to these common questions that stop many people cold:
"Tell me about yourself."
"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
"What would others say are your weakest points?"
"Why do you want to work here?"

get on the internet and google "behavioral interview questions" . The questions asked in the interview will be asking how you responded in a specific situation.

Thanks! i will look that up. im trying to get an idea of what some typical interview questions might be.
right now, im reviewing some school notes so i can make sure i know the basics that i would be expected to know. I was told by a friend that works there that i will be asked some questions that i wouldnt be expected to know as a new grad to see if i will try to BS by way through.

I am in the same boat, except I am a new RN. Competition is fierce, and getting your foot in the door can take a long time.

I hear that!
My school cranks out 25 new Grads every 4 months and the local Community college puts out 15 every year! in the last 6 months, i have probably pout out 40+ applications. This is my first hospital interview. There are 6 positions open here at UCD. I cant even imagine how many applicants there must be. I feel fortunate to have been at least called for an interview.
