After owning a Split Window for many years and now having my first Bay, here's a few observations:
Goes down the freeway like a "normal" car.
There's an access cover to the motor with all 4 spark plugs easily reachable.
I like the sliding cargo door way better than the two doors on my split window.
Everything works. Well, I guess that could happen with a splittie too, but probably less likely. I've even got reverse lights! |

Only from '73-'79. And please stop the profanity. Here in the Bay forum we only have polite, courteous, and respectful people. This is the most civil spot on the Samba. |

These are serious charges. On the Split Forum the penalty for such blasphemy is death. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

In my dreams! Mine sure doesn't. Not bad, but normal? No. A little wind; look out. A semi blasting by; look out. Normal for a Bay Window maybe, but not normal by modern standards. Just sayin' _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

You've got problems with suspension components, alignment, rear ride height, tires or tire pressures, a dialed in bus is no problem on the highway, windy or not. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

No matter what the car if you have a truck blasting by the other way maybe 1' away from your mirror it gets dragged around a bit. My DD is a heavy lump of a thing and it still gets buffeted a bit and I can vouch for its suspension.
Well, if you are so happy with bays, can I have your splittie? It'll be essentially immortal here. I just need to go for a walk down my street and see a fair few '60s and '70s vehicles which are people's daily drivers which look new still. Very little rain, no smog, no snow, flat straight roads, low humidity. Anyway... Yes bays are good. I'll be honest their front has always irked me a little from a design standpoint but generally a big step forward. My gripe with the front is from a design perspective it looks like it were tacked on from the seat bulkhead forward. Visually it looks fine to me. How many other vehicles would someone be willing to hang on to a beat up example for a decade to get back to working order? I've dragged my bay half way around the country during it's convalescence instead of getting rid of it because it was the most enjoyable long distance driver I ever had. Getting so close to its resurrection now its driving me nuts. Like that Steven King book about that kid digging up a spaceship or whatever it was. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Hmmm. Good to know busdaddy. I'll remember you said that, and it will be something to work towards. Seems like most of what I've read on this forum, is folks talking about getting buffeted around at freeway speeds. Most of the items you mentioned above have gotten attention on my bus, but obviously something is off. Thanks for the input. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

You bay guys seem to be having more fun. The posts are more about camping, driving, trying new things. Over in the Split forum it's blah this model, blah that model. What' correct, what's not.
Boring.
You guys are enjoying driving/experiencing the Bays, we're over there, well, fixing them. Always fixing them. Sigh.
Anyone wanna help sand my 23 Window? _________________ "There is only one sin; disconnection from self." |

There's a lot of that here too, but yes people still enjoy their bays because I guess they aren't hardcore collector vehicles. Sure there are "new" restorer types on here who want to restore and just take it to shows. If that's what they want to do good for them.
When mine is back on the road (it will happen. it will happen. it will happen *deep breath*) it's going cruising and camping again as nature intended.
Why is it taking me so long? Simple answer is I'm a full time father with extra duties too so no $. There is no reason why a "normal" person can't have a bay and enjoy it without some $500 special VW bolt exploding or whatever horrifically priced, worn out rare part failing and raining on someone's parade. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Yup! I've been secretly reading your forum, and I love the Bay attitude. Even after my bus is 'finished', I'm gonna feel a little scared driving such an 'expensive' bus.
And I'm like you as well, father of 2 kids, so money and time are as rare as the snowflake kick panel in my bus. But it will get done!
I'm thinking of getting a Bay in the meantime.. hmm. _________________ "There is only one sin; disconnection from self." |

Welcome to the club. Functionality over form. Like others, I just wanna use it for road tripping, camping, and the mobile base unit. Would I like a Split Westy with the 36hp & some spice rack fanciness? Heck yes I would.... and it would certainly be safely garaged while I was out playing in the dirt with the Bay Westy. Enjoy your new toy! _________________ > 78Grµn Westfalia `Donkey`

I don't have much money either. (The split window is long gone)
I paid cash for this one, with bartending tips I've been saving since Christmas. |
