|
|
Just put up an m-code plate to see if anyone was the current owner and thought about all the m-code plates that everyone had possibly collected over the years and wondered if it would be possible to reunite some of them with the busses they were taken from, thinking they would never be on the road again, but have risen from the dead.Is it possible to go through your stash of plates and list them in hopes some of us have that bus, and get it back to hat person, seems like it would be the correct thing to do given it made it back. If one were to happen that would be worth it but more than one would make great stories to post.Just an idea, maybe already tried? _________________ 1960 Slamma Jamma SC

I like it...I'm thinking sticky...People can keep their "trophies" if someone doesn't legitimately need them. _________________

I have taken M-code plates off junk buses that years later were someones projects they were fixing up. funny how what is considered restorable changes. I have given a couple back. Though, honestly, I have not seen the buses on the road.
whatever. If someone is actually fixing up a bus I have the plate from I will happily send it back to the bus on my stamp.
list your VIN and post pics. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Not only the M-code plates but the VIN plates also.
I've owned my bus since 1995 and its been missing the VIN plate
the entire time. M-code plates are repoped from time to time
but no one seems to mess with the VIN plate. Also getting one
to try and change VIN numbers on seems impossible.
Lot of folks have ethic problems with that.
By the way mine is 1 062 827 just in case. |

Right you are Kombisutra!! I believe this to be another UT M-code plate.
It's fun watching you decpher M-code plates for people that have owned their bus for decades and hadn't a clue about that lil plate.
Shitty pics provided by Isuck 4gs
PO cut the bulkhead and I believe the M-code plate was mounted in the engine compartment at one point. Interesting to note is I had this Bus's dipstick in my pocket at the Last SST. I showed it to Mr. Lance Armstrong who proceeded to sniff it it and correctly identify it as an H case 66. Impressive stuff!!! |

What do you do when the vin plate and m code are missing, and on top of that, the vin number in the back has rusted away. Is there any other way to locate the vin. My Scab has a state assigned vin number on the door jamb. This really sucks. My Scab is a 66 or 67. I want to return it to the road, but don't want to touch it until I track down the original vin. |

The stories are amazing of drivers finding their missing plates as it seems so needle in a haystack. However, in order to complete the grieving process and allow the truly nameless to move on, at some point -and accepting the illegality- a doctor should consider a proper year/model graft. Anybody have a pic of the re-pop plates to post so we could see how close the tooling is?
While unfortunate to have harvested the longest string of non-walk-through buses, I am fortunate that they've all had their data and identities intact. |

I have been playing around with re-stamping plates for awhile now..
But always seem to busy to sit and do it..
Some samples below..the set up isn't exactly right, but these were trial runs..
Font and spacing is spot on from originals. I have stacks of originals that I have tried to match them to.
Plate on the left is aluminum, right is steel..

There is a fake 21 window that lives about 3 blocks from my house, his bus has the mplate that was supposed to be on my bus. My bus was going to be scrapped but I saved it. _________________ 62 Standard Type 2 (Nothing Fancy)

So, is his bus registered with your bus' VIN? _________________

I actually have a 77 westy, but a friend of mine showed me a bus he has in his back yard, I copied the m plate down and was wondering if there is a way to tell year and make of bus from it?
Is there a place I can plug it in and find out? _________________ "My shovel is sharp, my pick is sharp, and my will is outstanding." - Rod Marinelli
