I'm surrounded by large trees, which is nice. The westy though gets constant sap, huge needle piles, branches etc. I can also tell that the top itself has likely never been cleaned, at least not really..

So, today I blew off the debris and decided to really clean it. I used this great grease removing hand soap [Orange Goop - with pumice. Harbor freight] shown below- many of you probably use it after working on the car.

It's seriously effortless, the entire top was done in about 20 minutes and it was very rewarding.

Two towels.
I dampen the first in a cup of water and apply hand soap to. With this I lightly scrub the surface in circular motion. The second towel is just damp with water and I wipe it all down and take the debris away with it. The surface in the last picture is slightly wet but you can see the difference. Take a look.

There are different types of hand cleaner like this- can't imagine how you've had bad results with this brand though ..

I've been to my knees in grease and can't imagine an easier way to effortlessly remove it than this stuff.

That is freakin amazing. I have a bit of that black stuff (mold?) on my top but no amount of scrubbing with car soap gets off. Will the citrus stuff harm the finish? Because if not I am totally going to do this (then penetrol!)

I thought I read that if you put Penetrol on a white pop top it'd make it yellow? I put it on my blue one and it made it beautiful, couldn't live with out it! No personal experience w/ the white though, check around...

Good point....forgot about the slight yellowish tint. My top is tan so I was not worried about discoloration. Imagine the blue and maroon look amazing after "the treatment".

Honestly this stuff cleans it so well I wouldn't even bother with a coating over it. I wouldn't apply anything that made the top change colors..

This pumice hand soap is not invasive or corrosive at all to the top.

If you don't want to use Penetrol a good quality wax coating will help preserve your efforts....

I learned-and forgot about this trick from an old Bodyman I knew. I had a bay window bus that was chalky and he told me to use some pumice hand cleaner cut with water and I would be able to get my shine back with minimal hand effort. It worked! Looks nice!
