|
|
I have searched and read all of the threads I can find regarding the rebuilding of the metal charcoal canister. The most detailed explanation I can find is from Mike (Bookwus) over in the Beetle - Late Model/Super forum and various other VW forums.
In his explanation, he soldered an air-tight screw cap onto the body of the canister to reseal after replacing the charcoal.
My question is, has anyone else seen another idea that might work since his work? I'm not sure how the soldering would hold up to the air pressure. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

Mike's Bug and Bus were his daily drivers. I'd trust his how to's anyday. He was very active on the www.vwar.com site regarding the autosticks. he knew them inside and out. |

Soldering is quite sufficient for fuel tanks, I've soldered air lines that handle 100psi+, besides the canister operates at atmosphere as it's vented to the air cleaner. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

For the soldering, do you use a propane torch? What type of solder is best for this job? _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

this is the metal canister style? From a 1971? If so basic High School shop class soldering with metal solder and acid flux paste is fine. The carbon particles are impegnated with gasoline and oils so wash it out first and use new steam activated charcoal pellets. We got ours in bulk from a local aquarium shop.
If this is a late bay like say 1978 and on, they are available new or were a couple months ago.
If it is 76, 77 etc the tops pop off with a scew driver. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

No solder needed! Just some Permatex and a hole cutter.
Take a look. _________________ "Consistent maintenance with quality products is the cheapest warranty you'll ever need."

Guess I should venture out of my Bus world every now and then. lol
I also like the rubber plug idea. Might need o investigate that further. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog
