Side Marker Reflectors?

Were the side markers always reflectors only, or are they lights as well?
The previous owner installed some hideous, generic marker lights on the rear of my '74 Westy, and I want to return it to stock. These are the ones you buy at Auto Zone or a truck stop...

Rear were lights, fronts were just plain reflectors.
