I get so stir crazy reading all the great threads about exploring and camping out West. We get out there as often as we can, but it's a long haul from New England. I'd like to start a thread about great camping adventures in the Northeast. I'm primarily interested in wild and beautiful places for Syncros but 2WD adventures are always welcome too!

I'll start the ball rolling. I live in the Adirondack park so I can recommend lots of good places to explore in upstate New York. The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is located near Inlet New York (near Old Forge) off Rt 28. This is a giant wilderness area of streams, small ponds, and lots of opportunities for hiking and camping. There are 40 miles of dirt roads with 140 rustic campsites. This website gives a good overview:

http://www.cnyhiking.com/MooseRiverPlainsWildForest.htm

Last time I was there the ranger station was unmanned and camping sites were first-come, first serve. All the sites have a picnic table, fire pit and a rustic outhouse. The main roads are quite good (fine for 2WD) unless it's very muddy but there are some interesting side roads and logging trails that can be explored in a Syncro. Black flies can be very bad in May or early June so bring DEET and window screens. Here are a few pictures from our last trip:

What other great trips do people recommend in New England?

Cheers,
-Bill

Most of the offroading I do in VT and CT is on private property, owned by family or friends.

Orleans and Ptown are my favorite on the Cape.
The beaches allow permited Syncros.

Moose River, ME 04945 is awesome for rafting and offroading.

Mud season in VT is just plain fun...!

We have a lot of great offroad trails here in Michigan also. About 45 min. North of where I live there are thousands of acres of state and federal land.
Mostly two tracks and lots of sand. 4wd is best but a well equiped 2wd can get the job done if you know your limits. It is easy to get turned around so bring a gps if you go.

I'll definitely get some 4 wheel pics on Chapin Beach in my Hometown of Dennis, MA, Cape Cod this summer.

I air the tires down to 15psi and the syncro is a sand tank.

New Hampshire is great too:

I was based out of Harwich Port, MA for 4 years while working out of Boston.
Sand is fun!

I've only toured NH in a Syncro during winter.
Been to the race track a few time too, not driving a van. Cool

The Moosehead area in Maine is good, also the Flagstaff lake region. One suggestion would be to keep your CB on so you can stay out of the way of logging trucks. They really go fast on the unpaved roads here.

Thanks Denis -- I was looking at the Charlvoix region east of Quebec City. Looks like lots of great roads, things to do, parks, and places to camp. Have you explored that area?

I would love to resurrect this thread and get some more ideas / locations for great camping spots in New England. I always start to daydream and get ideas around now for Spring/Summer missions with my family. For places I have never been before I like to do as much research as possible ahead of time, especially when the whole family is involved. When it's just me and the motorcycle it's a different story as getting lost is part of the adventure. Being from Northern Vermont I am always interested in learning more new areas in my home state, but we LOVE the Adirondacks and the rest of New England, too.

Who has some amazing New England camping spots that they are willing to share?

Why wait for summer Exclamation

Most ski areas have an area for RVs to park.
I have not had any issue camping overnight to get first chair in the AM.

Stowe, VT
Stratton, VT
Mt. Snow, VT
Hunter Mtn, NY

All welcomed my Syncro with open arms.

Located in the Berkshires of Western Mass is a "closed" state park called Windsor State Forest Park.

http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/massparks/region-west/windsor-state-forest-generic.html

You can hike to the Jambs (mini gorge) and there are a series of logging trails to motor around on. There are camp sites that are abandoned and empty. If one were quiet enough, I'm sure you could get away with an overnighter with some friends there. I'm planning on doing this in the summer of 2015 (after I fix my dead Zetec, but that's another thread to be started.)

There are lots of areas where I have camped for fishing weeks in NH, and western Maine. Grab a Gazetteer, and have a look at northern NH...
Many of those areas have great dirt road roaming, and camping spots to be found.
That said, I'm not sure what "the family" would consider great camping spots - I typically am looking for the most "out there" spots I can find, with only the north woods, and creeks, to entertain....
What are you looking for?

Hey Insynchro,

Goodonya for winter camping in your bus. Mine is stored in the barn from late November to about mid April. Hasn't seen a salty road in my decade of ownership and I plan on keeping it that way (after watching my new Subaru melt into a puddle of rust after 10 years of driving on Vermont's roads year round I am more scared than ever of the destructive power of our salt policy).

We live in Stowe and are connected deeply to the mountain. If you ever find yourself heading to town again, contact me and I'll give you a 'locals' look into our town...

Also, any excellent spots for camping and adventure in your neck of the woods in NY?

Thanks and will do.

I was a R&D rider for Burton Snowboards for over 15 years so I know a few around Burlington and Stowe Wink
Always nice to meet new people and take some tree runs.

This is great! I've been wanting to find some spots to explore up around Burlington and the North East Kingdom, and even over in NH and Maine.

Birdseye Mountain down in Castleton has some good logging trails and space to play. and there are plenty of dirt roads between Rt30 and 22a in VT with some hidden lakes/ponds.

Insyncro, if you're up in VT taking some turns give a shout, our van crew has most of the mountains around here covered and conditions have been amazing for only being December.
