Nice! The disadvantage of that is you cannot detach from it and drive away to town to get the wife her supplies while she and the kids sit happy at the camp Very Happy I like these kinds of threads because if you are looking at camping options you have a bunch of different peoples likes and opinions here to read. I've had a Shadyboy and a modern side tent. The tent was great but It always seemed wet when we had to fold it up. Also took up room in the van. We camp with 2 adults+2 kids minimum. You may have room for it.
I like the Shadyboy and no problems with holes. The westy roof covers them. Why worry?
If I would have known about the above pictured 45(?) with add-on side walls I would have gotten that. It really seems worthwhile, enhances your enjoyment. That's what you want? Get it. I'm going to look into that right now. Maybe move the shadyboy to the driver's side. Thanks for the pics! Awnings have always been mysterious to me, with all the arms, latches, sizes, etc.

Thummmper,

This is an intriguing idea.
Does anyone have photos of something like this actually in use?

We improvised something similar last year when it decided to rain for 3 days straight on a Yosemite trip. We were a little unprepared, but did have a huge awning onboard.
If planned a little better I think this kind of tarp set up could be great.

We use a MEC Supertarp. With the GW rainfly it's the cat's meow. With proper pole placement and a little ingenuity you can drop it off the van and drive away for the day. Mark where you park and setting up takes minutes. Nothing on the side of the van, huge square footage and adjustable for all sorts of conditions. As a master of tarpology(self-appointed) it's my best work ever.( Faces have been blurred for witness protection reasons...jk)

$150.

Tarpologist, nice setup. I've thought of doing the same thing. This eliminates the dripping rain gutter. Looks good, but funny looking family..... Very Happy

In windy conditions, guy-lines are used; in rainy weather, one side is lowered slightly for run-off.

I also have the Dometic, a Catalina 2500 model. Paid for and installed by the previous owner. It's very easy for one person setup.

It is basically a tent rolled into a aluminum tube. If there is a breeze during setup you have to chase the fabric since it is so light weight. There are sets of poles that need to be installed and if you don't use it regularly it is easy to forget where they go. I had the optional down poles and they all fit into the case but it takes some doing. Folding it correctly and rolling everything into the case in a breeze also tests the patience.
The set up and break down takes enough effort that we didn't use ours very often. A different type that is easier to deploy/put away would prove to be used more often.
We sold ours

Can't say I would really use an awning much at all, but I was always curious about the simple $100 Kelty Car Tarp.

I have seen several Shady boy awnings that were mounted withot any holes drilled in the van body. I'm not sure who is making the mounting kits but they are out there. Basically a modified version of the fiamma mounts.

For me the number one criteria is ease of use. If something takes a long time to set up I find that it does not get used. The fiamma takes about 45 seconds to set up and it does not take up any space inside the van.

One thing about these shadyboy's and fiama is in all of these pics posted here I can really see how effective they are at shading the camp Rolling Eyes I am just sayin they are great at what they do~setup easy and hang on the Vanagon. Other than the Fiama with drop down walls they all look like a ripoff to me.

Look at the pic in my sig. It is all in how you park your van to get the shade. The Sun is pretty predictable.
