quit those stupid comments.. the guy was happy to find the remains of his fathers car and rebuilding based on it will be the closest he can get to getting the whole car back.. nobody has claimed it would be a complete kdf-wagen when rebuilt. but its better than notihing isnt it? |
my thoughts exactly, even though some of those comments are funny.
i feel myself lucky to live in a world where these finds are shared with us and info keeps coming from all around the world, and we should be grateful for those that share this with us.
this chassis will get the right treatment and will be restored as it should. some parts can be made, some originals can be found, and in a few years we might see the long awaited update: "Norwegian KDF will be present at Hessisch /Camberg 201X" i heard stories here in my country of times when parts were scarce and brought by foreign students on request, people restored (big term, repaired is more appropriate) their cars based only on magazine photos or just by pure guess, and i am glad those times are over. i am sure parts will appear in time, bit by bit.
best of luck! i know what it feels like to start on an updated body with lots of missing parts. _________________ 1960 1200 model 117 deluxe ragtop

Interesting find, and the story behind it! I'll keep reading this thread for sure.
Makes you wonder what else from the wartime era there is to be found out there in all these barns - I'm sure there are loads more to be discovered! |

rockstock; I am not sure what muppet you are referring to, but here are my two cents:
- We know exactly where the original, wrecked body was buried.
- "A 500-series body on the wrong pan "popping up"":

So are you going to try and dig it up to restore?? Would be a fantastic effort and great story, I for one wish you the very best of luck.
Reminds me of Marks "Kempes" van, found half underground in sweden

I translated with babelfish and it said the car was more than 50 years old in July 2008. It should be 1958 or older. It was dumped in 1969.

If you dig that up that'd make such a sweet time lapse video . I'm waiting to see that, that will be awesome. I say will because I know at least some one will do it _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

It was actually a 1960 model I accidently typoed the nine next to the zero .
Not worth the effort or the space it took up in the museum

You should have no worries of jealousy, as not many folks are holding envies or desire to volunteer as a soil relocation technician.
But if my viewpoint came across as envious then I sincerely appologize....
I volunteered for Native-American Archeaological digs in the California deserts (for extra-credit during college), where I saw a lot of 20th century rust being Scientifically logged by safari-garbed goobs in IndianaJones hats.
I'd like to see that shell excavated as much as the next guy, as it would make a great conversation piece.
But who is truthfully anticipating a restorable base-car??
The "digging rights" are probably more valuable than the obtainable remains. _________________ I contend that we thinking people should,

The value of the remains is not really important, surely in this context its the emotional value and the age/worth of the body is a plus?
I know where there are 2 early (well oval but nothing like this) cars buried by a farmer not too far from my brothers place. I'm never gonna dig them up. But if it was my fathers old bug, I'd be there like a shot.
Really looking forward to the photos

A few kilometers from where I live theres a bunch of old cars buried, many of those are old VW`s..
I don`t know exactly when they buried them, but it`s been at least 15 years.
My memory may be a bit of, but I`m shure there where at least one split.
To be honest, I hate myself for not trying to buy some of them back then
Most of the cars where kinda good the last time I was there stealing parts for my now dead `65

The saga continues…
spokymulder: The prefix is 100% for sure a ”1” and the tag is beyond doubt the original one sitting with the original welds.
The authenticity of the tunnel, the number and the identity f the car is absolutely certain and for sure.
On both the Type 60 (Prefix “1”) and the Type 51/82E (Prefix “5”), the number tag sits behind the shifter for all wartime years. This is sort of odd, since all Kubelwagens/Type82s (Prefix “2”) from the same years – have the tag in front of the shifter. Most likely it has something to do with the fact that Sedans had carpets and Kubels did not. This is a specific feature to spot of KDF-Wagen chassis over a Kubel-chassis.
As you see from the pictures – most loose parts have been swapped for later at some point in time – but loose parts can be sourced or made. The tunnel carries the “soul” of the car itself.
So – back to the history of -1-01996X-:
Right before Christmas last year the identity and authenticity had been verified and both the hunt for more history – and – a “persuasive period” was started. The farmer had found the partially blasted ’51 Split body on an abandoned airfield in the Norwegian mountains back in the mid-80ies. The original Split-pan came with the empty shell and this was hauled home and dropped in his barn.
A few years later, a neighbour told him about an older guy that used to be into Beetles and all he had left was a “perfectly restored” old chassis for a Splitwindow in his barn. The farmer picked up the “house-paint”-painted grey chassis for next to nothing and saw it as a perfect and easy start of the restoration of his blue Split Beetle. The ’51 pan was thrown outside the barn, and the body put on top of the “restored” chassis.
Then it sat……and sat….until we found it. But the farmer had dreams for the ’51…and with a restored chassis, the restoration was going to be a piece of cake he thought. So – it was not for sale. Not even for trade against a fully restored driving ’51 chassis that would fit the blue shell much better.... |
Hello. If its so that VW factory did restored lots of cars in 1949, is it so that might be the case on my 1949 std.VW, because I got some Kdf parts on it? |

I'm curious, why do people bury Volkswagens in Norway ?
Why am I the only one that asks this question ?
I remember my Dad buried my Henry J engine in the back yard
(I was 16) I never asked, now it's too late...... _________________ 81' single cab 1.8T Syncro (converted)
