Are you sure you have the correct shift stick? Here's a picture by hazetguy.
Not sure what year you have. |

I def. have the right shifter. I just ordered new busings, but I am worried that this is not going to solve the problem. |

I've been having some shifter issues as well
I know that the pin on the end of shifter deff is peened into place
And should not be popping out on you.
My issue is I'm unable to get 1st and 2nd gears but 3rd and 4th are no problem
I also unable to get reverse.
I hope you are able to solve your problem. _________________

Please do elaborate on how you deff. know the pin is peened permanently into place. Why is pin spring loaded then? If something is "fixed" in place then VW would never have sprung for the spring. I have yet to take apart my other bus for a look see because the job is APITA plus its Africa hot here with the humidity of a hurricane. |

I have 4 shifters here in front of me(various years for split buses)
1- for 60/61 bus
2- mid year
1- 66/67 year
All have the pins peened where they don't move in the
Hole they live in. I also had
Another shifter that the pin was loose(came out of it hole)
Still had its spring with it. I knocked
It back into the hole and it set nicely without coming out again.
I guess I shoudnt have said it deff. Shouldn't be loose
But the way I was seeing it is having 4 shifters with the pin peened in
And one that "was" loose and
Now is fixed back into the hole just made sense to me that they were
Peened in at the factory and this is how they were supposed
To be. The spring that's on the pin seems to help hold the pin
Into the hole. I really have no idea why else Vw would have
Used a spring there. Especially if it's
Peened/fixed into this hole. I have 2 buses here also
That I'm also going to pull the shifter to see what
The status of the pins in them are one of the buses is pretty
Much an all org. Unmolested bus and I'm hoping it's shifter
Will give me a more deff. Answer. _________________

I just checked my factory parts book manual as well as the blue service manual-no help. The pin on my shifter slides right into the recess hole so i do not know how one would peen that pin. It seems to me the outer diameter of the pin head would have to be a bit larger than the hole in order to peen, though I am no peen expert. In fact the only peening with a hammer I've ever seen done was on and old 3 stooges episode. Poor Curly. Any suggestions? |

I recently was able to solve my issues with
Only getting 3rd and 4th gears and no 1st or 2nd and no
Reverse.
With the advice from a friend who had the same
Problem and figured out what was going
On. After installing a fresh rebuilt Trans. All new bushings and couplers
And shift rods. The placement of the org. Dimples in the main shift rod at back end and placement of dimple on the hockey stick rod coming from the nose cone were off. I simply just had to use a flat ended
Bolt through the rear coupler to the main shift rod
Once I was able to find the sweet spot after
Adjusting and getting all 4 gears working
Correctly and reverse as well I had to carefully drill
A new dimple into the rear end
Of the main shift rod. Then install the correct grub screw
And problem solved.
Hopefully this can help some of
You that seem to be having the same
Problem. _________________

OK I have several busses. and have had several over the last 30 years.
My 66 shifts better than any of the others. I believe most of the parts are original It was pretty rusty but It even had all the beauty rings date stamped correct (delux) 13 window. I also rode in a friends 66 back in the 80s his was the same. My shift position is near the driver seat. When in second it almost touches the seat and that is the same as his back then. Both original busses. Apparently it has a longer shaft and it also has a aluminum spacer (like the short shifter on a bug), I think in 66 they incorporated a short shift. The thro is shorter than on my other busses and shift rod is ORIGINAL. not chrome and keeps the same nob. I also have a 67 that was super rusty and the shifter was off so I am not sure what the deal is there. My 66 had longer bolts to make up for the spacer too.
Anyone else have the same experience. _________________ Owned Countless VWs over the last 35 years.
