So, our trans is at German Transaxle of American currently getting rebuilt, since its apart I thought it would be a great idea to install a temp sensor.

Only issue is, GTA has never done one, and is weary of just drilling and tapping without any knowledge about how or why (which I totally agree with, its kinda an expensive case to go putting holes into if we dont know what we are doing)

So, Im curious to hear peoples opinion on this.

I have this sensor

I have seen pics of this installed, but it looked like it was just drilled and tapped, which seems problematic since the threads on it were very shallow and the case where to install was very thin.

Does anyone have any feedback on installing a temp sensor in the trans?

Please specify the problems you've heard. Aso please include a link to the pics of the install location for discussion. Where was it "very thin"? Near the differential about the thinnest I've found is 8mm which is plenty.

Be sure you know what the thread is on that sensor. There exists two VERY similar pipe threads in that size. You want to use the tap that matches your sensor.

USA standard: 1/8-27 NPT 27 threads per inch
and
British Std Pipe: 1/8-28 BSP 28 thds per inch

Heres a pic of the two taps.

You can see from the TPI that the threads are different, and from the pic you can see that the "taper" is steeper on the 1/8-27NPT. Anyway they are not compatible, but people screw them together anyway, with a lot of sealant. It's much better to not bugger up the threads on things components where a seal is desired.

This is where we are thinking of mounting, in the same location as that sensor, the worry is the case won't be thick enough to get enough threads seated and prevent the sensor from leaking. The sensor is a 1/8npt 27 thread pitch

It won't leak, NPT is a pipe thread, it's tapered. It seals without thread sealant. But you probably will add sealant too. Teflon tape for example, or paste. No worries about leaks.

When you do a pipe thread you should test fit the sensor a couple times during the threading process to verify it ends up as deep as you prefer (into the tapered hole).

Thanks! Now looking at it, it makes perfect sense I just wanted to see if anyone had done it and had issues
