wow thanks for all these great ideas guys im very inspired i think i have a pretty good idea on what im going to do now all i need is a bus to do it to i am also wondering if it is posible to put a pop top onto a tin top bus because i might be getting a tintop pretty soon from a guy down the road from me but i know another guy who has a 71 westfalia pop top who will sell me his bus for 300 but it has been in a pretty bad crash and it dosent have an engine or the interior it would have to be a parts bus but i think i might buy it along with the tin top so i can put the pop top onto the tin top if that is posible another option for me would be a high top bus im not sure yet though thanks for all the wonderfull ideas guys zach |

Use the search function... there have been a few that have grafted/modded a pop top on a tin top with great results. |

The idea that has always intrigued me is a functional (though obviously not OPTIMAL) camping kit that could be loaded into the bus after removing the middle seat, and stowed in the garage again when camping weekend is done. You would have to be very smart about your design, but the opportunity to camp, and then haul the max amount of passengers or gear that a bus is capable of is too great an idea to pass up.

This idea was in production way back in 1955 from the Archives section of the Samba:

There was also a book with plans, long ago. I email scans of the plans to anyone who sends me a PM with their email address.
Then you can be a man with a plan for your van, understan? |

I'm not a carpenter by any means... I built all my interior using 3/4" and 1/2" Birch plywood from Lowes..... drew out my plan on the computer.... installed some "T" molding to make it look a little nicer...
I wanted to have ample storage without sacrificing too much room...... The cabinet with the fridge has side storage and the lid opens for storage above the fridge... This layout works for me...
If i do it again i'll probably get rid if the sink... I use it maybe twice on each campout... just for brushing teeh and freshening up... I could use the extra room instead...
I think i have about $300 in all wood , paint, fabric and stain.... the fridge was expensive but well worth the investment... It uses 1/2 the power of the original..

You could also think about changing the Camp lighting in the rear to LED... Mine uses maybe 1/4 the power of Incandescent bulbs.... It was a $50 investment.... got them at IKEA... 12v. under cabinet lights... nice when your camping for an extended period on the batteries....

Nice layout... ... but do you really wanna cook inside the bus...? I know many have moved to the outside for anything short of heating up water for coffee... Bacon, Fish, and most other meal odors will linger for weeks inside a bus.... Just a thought..
I use a small single burner stove in the bus for heating water only.... It works great outdoors too... I use it every trip.... I have a bigger stove for larger projects but the little one stays in the bus in it's case...

74Bajabug ... Nice and roomy... I've been thinking of redoing mine to something more like yours....losing the westy side cabinet... but still retain the fridge... _________________ Peace,

x2. used to cook in my '89 westy and it was convenient, but stunk and made for a lot more cleaning/airing out etc. in my '72 resto gonna cook everything outside. especially since i'll be doing 90% of my camping in bear country. don't wanna be the hard candy shell with the soft chewy center. |

Those are awesome and I can only hope to aspire to them. How is the groove made for the T molding by the way?
I love those designs.
I've been trying to figure out how to do something like them while keeping the walkthrough part. I think a sink is useless for me as is a underneath water tank (also impossible) and while I have the most awesome tiny little stove with oven (Flavel brand) It'd be pretty useless plus to get my bay to spec I'd need to cut a whopping hole in the side to install an LPG tank box. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). I used a dremel tool with a saw blade..... just run it around the edge of the wood... _________________ Peace,

A guy could always install a 50/50 slider above that stove, and jib-up a sort of fumehood/fan deal that jammed into the slider frame and blew that stink outside
seriously tho i'd like to see that _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

That's true. Our caravan has a little range hood with a fan and light for its little stove / oven. If I had bought that high top I would have been tempted to do that. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Well, here's my exhaust fan! It's a rechargeable 6" fan that we use to get a little air moving when it's hot at night. Also works great for blowing those cooking smells out the vent window.
We got a good laugh from this a few years ago while on a day-trip to the Blueridge Parkway. We were sitting in a parking lot with a great view of the valley below, cooking some beef tips & ramen noodles for lunch. Man, you should've seen people as they pulled up and got out of their cars. Guess they weren't expecting to smell that in a parking area on top of a mountain!
