I'm sure glad I went electronic 35 years ago.

I bought my 73 (single carb, yea I know. it runs ok) without a working brake booster. the vac line TO the booster has a spark plug stuck in it, but nothing on the motor on the vac nipple. when I idle and put my finger on the nipple/vac port, shouldn't I feel some vac? why would I not? do I need a higher rpm to feel the suck? Possible other issue? |

There is probably a raise boss on the front and/or rear of the center section of you manifold. You will need to drill and tap the boss for a 1/4" pipe tread and then install a nipple that will accept the vacuum hose for the booster.
My setup is a bit different than yours, but you can see the nipple attached to a 90° street ell which is screwed into the front of the manifold:

oh man. I feel like I am setting my ignorant self up here... what is the black elbow tube coming off the motor in the lower right of the pic? that is what I assumed was the vac port. I have nothing on it, and the big braided line that is blocked goes right up to it |

That is the outlet on the fan shroud that originally supplied purge air for the carbon canister. It has light pressure on it and not vacuum. The vacuum port is to the left of the center section of the manifold in the pic. |

Got a pic of the vacuum port? |

I'm in the market for a voltage regulator for my bus. External VR for an alternator..
I posted on my thread but Haven't had a reply.
I don't have a VR the one that came with my bus was from a 53 packard, and I don't want to use that one as I know nothing about it.
What are my options in terms of new VRs or used ones? _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

If it's got a regular 72+ bus alternator for a type 4 it's a common one at most parts sellers and FLAPS, or there's plenty in the classifieds. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I would suspect that regulators from many cars running externally regulated Bosch alternators would work. I know I have installed several different regulators over the years and they have all worked. My present electronic regulator must be a dozen years old at this point in time and (knock on wood) has never given a moment's trouble. |

Hmm, I see brands like Beru, Bosch, Duralast, Import Direct, and InterMotor.
Which brands have you installed?
Wondering if Bosch and Beru VRs is built better than the others or if it's $6 more for the name.
Napa seems to be carrying both Bosch and Beru. _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

I have had a lot of problems with Bosch parts starting about ten years back. Given the choice between Bosch and Beru, I would go with Beru. |

Found an ACDelco VR on amazon. Amazon's vehicle filtering system says it fits 1974 Type 2...has a note of "with alternator 0 120 400 721"
Not sure if that refers to the 70A alternator or the 55A alternator.

Got a pic of the vacuum port? |
Wildthings got me sorted out. I thought the outlet on the fan shroud that originally supplied purge air for the carbon canister was the port. My carbon canister was long gone as well. have been gathering parts to replace it. |

K, Stupid question time.
1. How can I tell if I have an EMPI or a Weber Progressive?
2. Can someone identify these for me?
Particularly, which one is the idle speed screw green or blue? They seem to both adjust idle speed.
3. If I was going to buy a book or read a website on progressive carbs so I stop asking stupid questions about progressives where should I start?
Thanks. |

http://www.piercemanifolds.com/ is a good place to start.
That looks like a Holley from a Pinto or Chevette, we'll need to see much more to narrow it down.
Yellow square is a bowl vent that once connected to the charcoal canister on the ca it came from.
Grey is the low speed (idle) jet.
Blue is the fast idle speed adjustment.
Magenta is possibly vacuum advance.
Black is idle mixture.
Green is idle speed.
You may want to explore getting an electric choke heater for that, the water heated one on there now isn't doing anything. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks! That goes a long way to helping me dial this in. That's a water heated choke! Oh no, what does the electrical connection coming from it do then?
What part of it do you need to see to narrow it down? |

Well I didn't see an electrical connector and it looks like a watercooled one, is there a wire on it somewhere? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
