You connect an wire to the coil where you plug the condenser into. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

That's all it takes?!? Well, heck, even I can do that.

Doesn’t Chloe have the black gauges already installed? You might want this one to match:
https://www.vwispwest.com/211018533BK.html?p=
Also, your pickup coil just so happens to be the ONLY coil in the car. Terminal #1 (negative) gets a ~16-18 gauge wire run to the front. Some tachs need a diode to keep the readings accurate.

Kent,
I got one (two actually) from Just Kampers. Sven put one in Big Emma and the gauge face is a really good match. They sell both black and grey face versions. Also super easy to install (but we had the dash apart anyway).
I can pm you the specific info if needed.

Thanks Andrewtf. I didn't know other options were available, and have already ordered it from ISP.
Once that is in, I'll be one of the Gauge Geeks... tach, CHT, oil temp, oil pressure and voltage. Now all I need is the air/fuel ratio gauge and I'll have the equivalent of a DC-3 cockpit. _________________ -Kent-

Does anyone else do this...
I see an obscure part that may soon be NLA, and I'll buy it "just in case".
A few months ago, there was a discussion in here about the new steering coupling discs being of very poor quality. And someone posted a site of possible NOS parts being sold with the VW logo removed, so I bought it, even though the one on my van is perfectly fine.
And I did the same with the coupler between the shifter shaft and the transmission nose cone. That was only $5 at Pomona Swap Meet, so a no-brainer.
When I needed a little spring for the sliding door hold-open catch, I found a source in the Netherlands. Since the shipping was several times the cost of the spring itself, I bought a few. And the same thing with the little donut shaped steel ball that goes in the tranny nose cone.
So I end up with boxes of extra parts. The good part is I have them for friends who might need them, and they may trade me for something I may want, so it's a win-win thing.
But does everyone do this? Is it a "get-it-while-you-can" thing? _________________ -Kent-

I think we all do. There's some NLA parts that pop up that I can't say no too. Other parts I pass over.
In some ways, I'm an optimist when it comes to VW parts. There's been many long gone parts that have been reproduced in the past 5 years. Yes, many are garbage quality but others are not too bad.
The other thing I consider is most VW's on this site are not driven much anymore. It's rare that I'd put more than 2k a year on any of my VW's. With that said, it will be decades before I'd wear out any of the parts on them since they've all been refreshed. And yes, there are some who drive the crap out of their buses but the vast majority of bus owners don't. This is why there are so few aircooled repair shops anymore. It's also why more hard to find parts are not reproduced. The potential of sales doesn't justify the tooling costs to make the parts in many cases.
Most VW's went from daily drivers to garage queens 20 years ago and the trend isn't changing with the rising costs of these VW's. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

What's this black tube? Something to do with fresh air controls? I could not find it on the microfiches either.
I just noticed it yesterday after removing the pedal cover.

Not what I was looking for. There was a recent thread where the guy had these and I noticed how the VW stock linkage brackets could be used on these. _________________

Hey gang, the chrome part underneath the door handle? What is the name of that part? I’d like to purchase one but don’t know what to search for.
Thank you!

Hopefully this is a stupid question, otherwise I'll have to make another thread.
I got a replacement thermostat from awesome powdercoat, for my type IV engine because there wasn't one on it:o
I have no idea how to install this thing other than where the roller and bracket go.
These are the parts I was given:
It seems like I'm missing two mounting bolts. I have two washers but their website shows three. I'm assuming I remove the brass union nut and insert the cable and put the union nut back on. However I don't understand where the odd shaped bracket goes. I'm also not sure where the washers are supposed to go (do both go on the pulley, one on each side)? _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

Not really a stupid question, because those guys don't run thermostats.
The thermostat fits into the bracket and uses an M8x15mm bolt and wave washer to hold the special black washer and the thermostat into the bracket, ferrule facing rear of car. The bracket has studs built into the case, and uses M8 regular nuts and wave washers to hold it on. The funky bolt included in the kit gets a dab of sealant on the threads and the pulley on its shoulder.
Maybe these help?

The problem is that my bracket does not look like the one in those pictures. If I mount the bracket the same way as in the pics (rounded edge closest to the push rod tubes), the rear of the thermostat sits nicely in place in a hole in the bracket however the other end of the thermostat (with the union nut) sits in a cutout and I see no way to attach the little black bracket to the larger bracket. _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

Flip the bracket 180°. Don't worry about the rounded edge or flared lip. That's just there for integrity; orientation doesn't matter. What matters is the shape of the female threaded end of the thermostat matching the non-open slot in the bracket. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
