not a good picture, but how do i even up the door gaps on the slider? notice in the picture..... the back gap is a bit wide on top, and no so much on the bottom.
the latches are in the middle, and I have them closing right.... in and out that is. the door is even with the front and rear. 1st guess it to raise the front latch on the door frame????
Strange enough, i never removed that one. Gaps may have been FUBAR when I got it I guess.

Looks like the lower front roller needs shimming up a little, you'll have to move the striker up a bit as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

There was a shim under the roller bracket before. Couple square washers too. I put the square washers on top. I will try to slip them under.
I raised the striker a bit and the door would not close. Put it back for now. _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |

The square washers go between the bolts and the casting, you will have to kraft up some more shims from sheet metal.
How's the track the lower roller rides on?, if it's worn and rusty, or has a divot where the door sits when closed you might have other things to deal with too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

^^^^^^
what he said
assuming the lower slider track is smooth you will have a lot of futzing to do to make the gaps right.
the gap at the front of the door is usually a hair bigger, can't really get that gap super tight. some latch plates on the B pillar have a shim, which shoves the door rearward.
in a perfect world the U bolt/rear slider assembly would be 100% level, but i have seen door track where the steel wheel rides worn down 1/8-3/16"
to see how bad it's worn, look at the unused portion of that roller track, usually it's about 1-2" from the very rear, same on the front where the door holder opener dingus lives
that said, the U bolt mechanism has some wiggle room in the 4 bolts that hold it to the rear of the door.
basically, you have to fuck with ALL of the adjustments and strikers at the same time to get it right. it's a huge time suck especially compensating for worn tracks but it's usually possible to get it dam near perfect
when you get it right, your door should do this

In case you don't know, the rear latch on the sliding door on early bays has a secondary latch system. You either need to slam the door hard to engage it or pull up on the handle to latch the rear part of the slider in place. In the photo it looks like you may not have latched it in properly. |

Yessss! Inner door handles must be oriented correctly (downward) for the feature to work.
Sorry Erb, I just couldn't figure out how to make this video ten minutes long.

Remove cap (if present) on inside handle, remove screw and inside handle, pull outside handle out of door from outside. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Unless the handle shaft is siezed into the lock, then there's plenty of hammer work and bad words required. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Put the screw back in so you don't fubar the threads in the end, use a brass hammer and have a helper pull out on the handle while you pound. The pulling is more to prevent the shocks of hammering from loosening the handle on the shaft due to it's lopsided mass. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

what is really interesting to me is the lack of youtube video on this particular year... my 74 came out very easily but this one isn't... Does the lock cylinder need to come out before? It is in the handle on the 68... i pb blasted it and will pull and bang again tomorrow... _________________ 74 bay window dual webber 34 ICT's

No, it's along for the ride, and it'll also come out if it's locked, the sleeve comes out with it.

our 1970 used to close nicely, but my 71 door clunks into the reciever on the body unless I push the door in at the same time I am sliding it closed. and sometimes it doesn't pop open when I the release the door. I'm not looking forward to messing around with it _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php
